is probably considerably less than
$10,000 a year.
The church editor attributed the
relatively high salaries of rabbis
to "the lack of an anti-money bias
in Judaism." One rabbi was quoted
by Spraggett as saying that poverty
and piety are not related in Juda-
ism as they are in the Christian
tradition, that the rabbi is respect-
ed by the congregation and it is
proud to pay him well.

dispute in British Orthodox Juda-
ism.
Dr. Levy also resigned as Chief
Chaplain to Her Majesty's Forces.
e resignations become effec-
tively immediately, but Dr. Levy
told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency
he would remain in the Hempstead
pulpit until the end of this year
so that the congregation would
have time to find a new minister.
He said this would be difficult
because not many 'rabbis were able
to lead such a large, important and
sophisticated congregation.
Dr. Levy will become director

of the Jewish National Fund of

Dr. Levy told the JTA that his
resignation resulted from "accumu-

and that his backing of Dr. Jacobs
was one of the reasons but not the
sole one. He hinted that the
United Synagogue officials h a d
caused him more trouble than the
