New Weidman Novel, 'Word of Mouth,'
Is Marked by Several Noteworthy
Dramatic and Psychological Aspects

Jerome Weidman, after writing
a score of novels, had turned to
playwriting, and his `•Iorello"
gained for him new fame, com-
parable to that of storytelling. His
apparent new love for the theater
is reflected in his latest novel,
"Word of Mouth,"just issued by
Random House.
If this is not his best work, it
certainly is among his very best.
It is brilliant writing. This re-
viewer suggests to Weidmann's
readers that when they commence
tackling this newest work that they
make it at a very early hour.
They'll find it difficult to put the
book down without finishing it.
Reader attention will be great
and the suspense will retain inter-
est in the plot unto its finality.
Weidman introduces as his major
character a successful lawyer who
has every reason to be happy but
who is on the road toward suicide,
and in the half hour that remains
before he is to end his life there
is developed, through memories re-
constructed in his mind, his life's
story that emerges as a very great
drama.

John Sayer is porixayed as the
son of a genius who had estab-
lished a Single 'fax utopian colony
but whose life's work was ruined
by a scandal. John is approached
by a theatrical- manager to assist
in developing a play based on his
father's life. Because of the danger
of evolving a play that .might lead
to libel, the theatrical schemers
needed his consent.
It is in the course of the prepa-
rations for the drama that John
experienced reminiscences he had
shunned. He recalls events he did
not wish to 'remember.
His father had been named to the
U.S. Supreme Court by Hoover, and
the developing scandal resulted in
the withdrawal of the nomination.
It brought about tragedy—the death
of the schoolmaster in his colony
with whose wife the elder Sayer
was accused of having an affair,
and his own wife's suicide.

John's father commenced a new
life, after marrying the schoolmas-
ter's widow. But when John returns
to visit with his father in Australia,
he avenges his mother by taking

advantage of his young stepmother
who later dies after the miscar-
riage.
While John is happily married
and loves his son. the reconstruc-
tion of his life's , story arouses
memories that add to his confusion.
It is a disturbed man who acts in
disturbed fashion—adding tragedy

to tragedy.
The splendidly developed and
well-motivated novel is not only
excellent nara?tive: it is a great
