Bobby and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sid Schwartz, 19909 Hart- well, decided to try something new for his Bar Mitzvah at Adas Shalom Synagogue. In recent years, the post-cere- mony celebration has come to mean splashy, often formal, af- fairs. At the luncheon for Bobby, however, there were simple dec- orations: at each place was a small paper tree holding a Jew- ish National Fund certificate expressing the boy's gratitude to each guest. Thirteen guests of honor were called up to "light the birthday candles," which turned out to be the "planting" of 13 mock trees on Bobby's cake. Prior to his Bar Mitzvah, the United Nations Children's Fund to fight hunger and malnutri- tion among millions. of children who are fed the nutrient equivalent of an American school lunch every two days.. Jointly created by the Kellogg Co. and the U.S. Committee for UNICEF, "Food Wonders of the World" is a history of the world through the foods we eat. It con- tains hundreds of anecdotes about the eating habits of 39 countries, and answers such questions as: Where did watermelon originate? Who grew the world's first spin- ach? What U.S. president intro- duced spaghetti to the United States? What famous American dish was created by a dedicated gambler? From the Stone Age to the Space Age, the book explores dietary fancies and fads of kings, queens, diplomats, religious lead- ers, scientists, poets and phi- losophers, from Confucius to Robert visited Israel with his parents. who planted a grove on the name of the boy's grandpar- ents, Rose and Julius Schwartz. Bobby started his own garden of trees adjoining the grove. N o w, he is forming a new "bond" with Israel: Bobby's birthday gift money will be used to buy Israel Bonds. Yeshivah High Begins Computer I Training Program A new program in IBM elec- tronic computer training has begun with the new semester in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades of the Beth Yehudah High School, it was an- ced jointly by Hillel L. noui mn Abr s, president, and Rabbi Sa el E. Cohen, principal of Beth Yehudah High School. The new program will provide IBM computer training in solving business, engineering and science problems. A similar program is be- ing inaugurated in the Beth Jacob High School, girls' branch of Yesh- ivath Beth Yehudah. Spearheading the IBM training program is Seymour J. Wolfson, an alumnus of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah and honors graduate in physics from Wayne State Univer- sity. He is presently a PhD can- didate in physics at Wayne State University. Rabbi Cohen stated that this was a pioneering effort on the part of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah as this I type of training on the high school level-is practically nonexistent else- where in the country. Yeshivath Beth Yuhudah is the third school in Michigan to initiate such a program. Reality and Symbol The fasting and humiliation be- fore God, the confession of sins and contrition for them, and fer- vent prayer for forgiveness were, even before the destruction of the Temple, the reality in regard to the Day of Atonement, of which the rites in the Temple were but a dramatic syrabol.". 7--G.
