Jewish Education Sought for Youths in Montreal's Protestant Schools MONTREAL (JTA) — Parents of Jewish children attending Prot- estant schools in Montreal were urged to make sure the children receive a systematic Jewish educa- tion in recognized afternoon Jew- ish schools. There are no non- sectarian public schools in Quebec, all "public" schools being operated under either Catholic of Protest- ant auspices. The appeal was issued by the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Council of Jewish Educational In- stitutions, which reported also on a survey in the Cote St. Luc area of succh Jewish education. The survey found that 69.1 per cent of Jewish children attending the Protestant-sponsored schools do not attend Jewish afternoon schools. The survey was made by volunteers of the Jewish Junior Welfare League, the Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood and the young married group of the Combined Jewish Appeal. The statement said that "our aim must be Jewish education for every Jewish child throughout ele- mentary school age and, where- ever possible, through high school age." The Board of Jewish Minis- ters of Greater Montrael asked rabbis to speak on Jewish educa- tion during synagogue services and to urge their congregants to act to assure that every child re- ceives Jewish education. • Holiday Quiz By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright, 1964, JTA, Inc.) Why do some congregations have the Hakofot on the. night of Shemini Atzeret? In Israel there are not two days of holiday for the last days of Sukkot. There is only one day and it is called "Shemini Atzeret." In the Diaspora where an extra day is added, the extra day is called Simhat Torah, Thus,' in Israel the parade of torahs which we have on the night of Simhat Torah takes place on the night of Shemini Atzeret. The basic reason for the , parade of the scrolls altogether is an interesting matter. Some claim it is because of the original prac- tice in which the king read the torah to the People in the days of the Temple on the last day of the holiday of Sukkot. Others claim it is because the holiday of Shavuot is also called Atzeret (which means "gathering" or "conclu- sion"). Since they both have the same name they both are concerned with the torah. Hassidic congrega- tions, even in the Diaspora, have the Hakofot parade on rboth nights so as to resolve the doubt in case either night is not really the holi- day, or to be in conformity with the Jews of Israel so that Jews all over the world will be marching with the torah on the same night. Some start the parade at midnight and continue into the early hours of the morning, finally having their meal just before daybreak. Some have the Hakofot parade also on the 'morning of Shemini Atzeret. * 4 Why are honors given to cer- tain men who are called the bridegroom of the T or a h" on Simhat Torah morning? One of the endearing names by which the torah is referred to is the "bride." The Midrash claims that there was a spiritual marriage the torah, or between Israel and the Torah, or between Israel and God through the giving of the torah which took place on Mt. Sinai (Song of Songs Rattah Chap- ter 3). Therefore, there had to be a bridegroom. Also the festivities , over the torah should be like a wedding. Therefore, the gentleman in the congregation who is honored with reading the last portion of the Torah is called the "bridegroom of the torah." He may be said to sym- bolize the union of Israel with the torah and with the Almighty as nei stands in front of the torah in the presence of the Almighty.
