S. J. Wiener Dies; Bnai Israel Sexton
Pioneered in Zionism, JNF in Detroit

Samuel Judah Wiener, distin-
guished local Orthodox leader who
had been active in many tradi-
tional movements, died last Friday
at age 82, after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services were held Sun-
day at Kaufman Chapel. Rabbis
Isaac Paneth, Jacob Segal and Sey-
mour Panitz officiated and paid
glowing tributes to his memory.
Cantors Bermanis and Fenakel par-
ticipated in the service.
Surviving him are his son. Dr.
Israel Wiener, who is president
of the Detroit JQvish National
Fund Council; two daughters, Mrs.
Herman (Pauline) Canner and Mrs.
Sidney (Edith) Deitch, and five
grandchildren. He had been mak-
ing his home with his daughter,
Mrs. Deitch, since the passing of
his wife. who was active in many
women's movements here, 17 years
ago.
Born in Lida. in the province of
Vilna in Russia, Mr. Wiener came
to this country in 1902. ,He was in
the dry goods business in New
York before coming to Detroit in
1918. For a time he was associated
with the Robinson and Cohen firm.
Always a strict Sabbath ob-
server, - he turned to tasks that
would enable him to live up to
all Jewish traditions and he be-
came shammes (sexton) of the
Bnai Israel synagogue, the for-
mer Mullet Street Shul, and re-

mained in that post for 35 years.
For 40 years he was the head of
the Machpelah Cemetery Chevra
Kadisha.
Always active in Mizrachi, he
was a staunch Zionist and one of
his major devotions was to the
Jewish National Fund. As a pio-
neer worker in the Order Sons of
Zion he made the JNF his chief
Zionist interest and he encouraged
the founding of the JNF Women's
Auxiliary which began as a Bnai
Zion Women's Group.
He was active in Yeshivath Beth
Yehuda and aided it with many
collections. He also was associated
with the Chevra Kadisha of the
former Old Folks' Home when it
was located on Adelaide and
Brush.
From his 16th birthday he was a
Baal Koreh and was a reader of
the Torah in his synagogue here
for many years.

Katherine Applebaum
Succumbs at Age 73

Katherine Applebaum, a charter
member of Temple Israel and a
member of its sisterhood, died
Monday at age 73.
Mrs. Applebaum, 19356 Ashton.
also belonged to Home Relief So-
ciety and United Order of True
Sisters. Born in Chicago. she lived
in 'Detroit 30 years and was mar-
ried to the late Jack I. Applebaum.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Mor-
ris (Barbara) Zelmon; a . niece.
Mrs. Hal (Gertrude) Gordon; two
nephews. Beryl and Jack Leve; and
two grandchildren.

Tawas City Justice,
Hyman Friedman, Dies

Judge Hyman Friedman, justice
.of the peace in Tawas City for 15
years, died in Detroit Tuesday at
age 72.
The Tawas City-born Friedman
was a veteran of World War 1.
He leaves a brother, I. D. Fried-
man of California; and a sister,
Mrs. Casper Cutler of Detroit..
