In the Eight- eenth Century a Chasid was con- sidered to be -one who was a fol- lower of the movement begun by Rabbi Israel Bael Shem Toy. The general characteristic of this kind of Chesed is that he is devoted to a Rebbe who is considered to have some mystical powers. This kind of Chasid loves music and uses it as a means of bringing him closer to the Almighty. He is gen- erally enthusiastic about his reli- gion. A development of this kind of Chasid was the Chabad Movement which injected the three pillars of wisdom, insight and knowledge in- to the Chasidic movement. This kind of Chasid is today known as a Lubavitch Chasid who follows the leadership of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Thus the term Chasid, which originally involved strict ob- servance came to include piety, wisdom, understanding, joy and dedication to a leader as well. This term "Chasid" comes from the Word "chesed" which indicates goodness or kindness or reverance. In a4cient times (in the times of Tannaim), in The Hasonean per- iod, a Chasid was one who was very observant of the divine corn- rnandments. He would suffer martyrdom rather than break the Sabbath. In medieval Germany a Chasid was one who had extreme piety and ethical conduct. His gen- 'eral character was such that he SURF SAMUEL 3. (Copyright, 1964, JTA, Inc.) . KIEL (JTA)—An investigation is underway into the Nazi past of Hans-Adolf Asbach, former deputy minister president of Schleswig- Holstein. Dr. Hans Buhrk e, a spokesman for the State Justice Ministry, said the probe will seek to learn whether Asbach should be _charged with participation in the Nazi program to exterminate Euro- pean Jewry. He reported that evidence against Asbach was provided by the West German Central War Crimes Investigation Board in Ludwigs- burg. He added that the data had been turned over 'to the office of the Kiel state prosecutor but de- clined to give any details. Asbach, a co-founder of a Ger- man Refugee Party, became state minister for welfare affairs in 1950, a post he held until 1957. He was also deputy minister president from 1954 to 1957 and is now man ager, of a housing firm. He joined the Nazi Party in 1933 and held posts with the Nazi Labor front and with the government. Details about his wartime career have never been disclosed. Box Office Open 9-4i.ne. Mulka, one of the 22 former SS guards and other camp function- aries on trial here, admitted sign- ing the orders to bring Cyclon-B gas to Auschwitz when he was con- fronted with an official form he had signed. Presiding Judge Hans 'Hofmeyer showed Mulka the form ordering a five-ton truck to load up _Dessau with "Material for the Resettle- ment of the Jews" and to bring the "material" to the camp. Mulka, in response to a direct question, testified he knew that the phrase was a Nazi euphemism for poison gas. Previously, Mulka had also insisted that he did not know until the war ended that Auschwitz was one of the 250 camps set up in Germany and occupied countries to dispose of Jews and others con- sidered unfit to live by the Nazis.
