Negotiations for Vatican Schema Branded Another Totond

(Continued from Page 1)
terly against the C h u r c h, they
should say "Nostra Maxima Culpa"
— in plain Hebrew, Hotonu —
for rushing in where angels fear 1
to tread. The Church is within her
rights to interpret our history in 1
her own theological — dogmatic 1
terms. We are the ones who have I
transcended the bounds of histori-
cal responsibility and decency by
asking for a theological document
on the Jews as 'brethren' in faith
instead of urging the Church to
issue a strong declaration in socio-
logical — human terms affirming
the inalienable rights of the Jew
as a human being.
"I am very little concerned over
the response of the Jewish commu-
nity to the evangelical appeal con-
tained in the new draft. The Jew,
tenacious and totally committed
to his past, with faith in his glori-
ous eschatology, will reject this
appeal with dignity. Such ap-
proaches by the Church have been
made many times in our history
and the powerful Church has al-
ways failed to sway the Jew from
his eternal course. What hurts me
is that for the first time in our
history the Church was, because of
naive and equivocal statements. led
to believe that in the interests of
good will we are ready for some
revision in our historical attitudes
and commitments. The situation
does not call for hysteria and
readiness to incur martyrdom. All
it requires is common sense, re-
sponsibility, dignity and particu-
larly a moratorium on theological
'dialogue' and pilgrimages to
Rome."

is expected to face strong opposi-

draft on the part of the liberal
wing of the Council which consti-

priestly participants. However, the
possibility also exists that the
approximately 500 members of the

servative wing may manipulate to
keep the Jewish issue from being
debated openly, thus weakening
the stand of the liberals.

NY Cultural Center
to Be Built in Memory
of Farband's Louis Segal

NEW YORK (JTA) — The na-
tional executive of the Farband
Labor Zionist Organization has de-
cided to build a cultural and edu-
cation center to house the organ-
ization's Kineret Day School in the
Bronx, which will serve as a me-
morial to Louis Segal, the late sec-
retary of the Farband, who died
earlier this year.
Shortly before his death, Mr.
Segal had proposed the construc-
tion of a number of such centers
to house the organization's schools
in various parts of the city. The
buildings were also to serve as
youth and cultural centers. A total
of $400,000 had already been raised
by Mr. Segal toward the cost of
the first such center for the Kin-
eret School.
