the ten-year period, and the natur-
al increase of Jews is known to be
lower than 35 per cent increase in
the total Mexican population, the
mystery of the population increase
of "Israelites" from 17,575 to
100,750 was inexplicable until Dr.
Patai concluded his research.
The explanation is that mem-
bers of an Evangelical Christian
sect, which is not Jewish, listed
themselves as Israelites for cen-
sus roll call and thereby caused
the confusion.
Dr. Patai, director of research
of the Jewish Agency's Theodor
Herzl Institute, has done research
in Mexico since 1948 when he went
there to study the Indian Jews
of Mexico.
At that time, Dr. Patai located
a small Sabbatarian sect .which
called itself Iglesia de Dios Uni-
versal Israelita (Universal Church
of God,. Israelite). On his recent
trip, he reestablished contact with
leaders of this sect, and his inquir-
ies revealed that the membership
of the Iglesia de Dios had grown
in the ten-year period of the cen-
sus from a few hundred to 20,000
families. Preparatory to the 1960
c e n s u s, the leadership of the
Church had instructed its mem-
bers to list their religion as "Israel-
ita."
After ascertaining that the
membership of the Church in
1 9 6 0 was 15,000 families, or
about 60,000 persons, Dr. Patai
concluded that the census fig-
ures indicating a phenomenal in-
crease of population for the Jews
in Mexico resulted from the in-
correct listing of this small
Christian sect as Israelites or
Jews.
Upon discussion with Dr. Albino

Dr. Patai's research in Mexico
was jointly sponsored by the Theo-
dor Herzl Institute and the Ameri:
can Friends of the Tel Aviv Uni-
versity, of which he is president.

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — An
Israeli "agent," possibly in search
of Dr. Josef Mengele, the notorious
Auschwitz "selection doctor," was
murdered a month ago on the
Peruvian side of the Brazil-Peru
border, it was announced by Edson
Lasmar, Brazilian chief of the staff
of INTERPOL, the international
police agency.
Lasmar said he has asked his
Peruvian counterpart in charge of
INTERPOL work in Peru to try to
trace the murderer. He did not
name the Israeli "agent," but said
the Israeli was apparently killed
because he had found traces of
Mengele's whereabouts.

Annual Literary Award

BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — An
annual prize of 100,000 pesos to be
known as the Alberdi Award, to be
given each year to an author of a
book "in behalf of human solidarity
and living together without preju-
dice," was established by DAIA,
the central body Of organized
Argentine Jewry. The prize is
named after Juan Batista Alberdi,
an Argentinian patriot who drafted
the basis of this country's constitu-
tion 100 years ago.

to approve proposals for "align-
