proved a requirement of four years

Arthur Katz. president of the
Hebrew school. in announcing the
standard, said "the cause of Jewish
education will he greatly advanced
in our community if the various
synagogues and temples will es-
tablish uniform mi,nimum require-
ments for Bar Mitzvah boys."
He noted that many other Jewish
communities had done so and that
the action was "an invaluable aid
to expansion and intensification of
Jewish education."
The synagogues adopting the
four-year requirements were Ago-
das Achim Synagogue. Beth Jacob
Congregation. Congregation Ahavas
Sholom and Temple Tifereth Is-
ra'el.
It was emphasized that boys
must he enrolled in Hebrew schools
by the age of 9 to receive four
years of Jewish education prior to
Bar Mitzvah. The new rule per-
mites acceptance 'of - "satisfactory
evidence of equivalent training"
of the Bar Mitzvah candidate.

make the appeal at Young Israel
Northwest of which he is the spir-
itual leader, on Kol Nidre Eve.
A special award in the form of a
plaque bearing the coins of the
State of Israel will be presented
to congregations which achieve
outstanding results in the High
Holy Day effort for Israel Bonds.
The plaque consists of the seal of
the State of Israel together with
five Israeli coins symbolizing the
economic progress made possible
with the aid of the Israel Bond
program.
The five coins include the 5-
agorot hoin, showing three pome-
granates. from an old Hebrew de-
sign; the 10-agorot coin. with a
seven-branched palm tree. which
appears on the coins commemorat-
ing the Bar Kochba revolt: the 25-
agorot coin. illustrated with the
lyre, the ancient musical instru-
ment; the half-pound coin, with
the emblem of Israel; and the one-
pound note.

Greenfield Young Israel
to Receive Torah Scroll

at Special Ceremony
A ceremony on the completion
of Sefer Torah will take place at
Young Israel of Greenfield 3 p.m.
Sunday.
Mrs. Edith Cohen, president of

the Sisterhood of Young Israel of

Greenfield, will present the new
scroll. written in Israel. in memory
of her late husband. Hyman R.
Cohen.
The Torah will be brought from
her home. 15575 Addison:South-
field, to the synagogue in Oak
Park, accompanied by members of
the family and friends.
The scroll will be accepted on

behalf of Young Israel by Abra-
ham Selesny, president, and Rabbi

Joshua Sperka.
Appearing in the program will
be Rabbis Sperka, Samuel Prero
and James T. Gordon of Young
of Northwest Detroit and
L'Young Israel of Oak Woods, re-

spectively. David Greenbaum will
render musical selections. David
I. Berris is chairman.
The committee in charge of ar-
rangements includes Rabbi Sperka,
Salesny and Rev. Wolf Gold. The
public is invited.
