by Israel's Atomic .Energy Chief
GENEVA (JTA)—Israel is con-
centrating its nuclear energy re-
search on combining natural ura-
nium with heavy water in a search
for means of utilizing uranium as
it occurs in nature, Dr. Ernst D.
Bergmann, chairman of 'the Israel
Atomic Energy Commission, de-
clared here.

G en. Rabin Warns
TEL AVIV (JTA) — General
Yitzhak Rabin. Israel's ' chief of
staff, warned that. if Jordan
joined with Egypt
pt in a joint mili-
tary command. Israel would take
the necessary steps to safeguard
itself from the "serious threat."
The warning was the second
from Israel leaders stemming
from Jordan's recent rapproache-
ment with President Nasser of
Egypt. Earlier in the week, Pre-
mier Levi Eshkol had warned the
Jordanians against any "adven-
tures," saying that Israel was keep-
ing a close watch on developments.
It was learned recently that Jor-
dan was considering a new water
project that could cut off the flow
of the Yarmuk. a Jordan River tri-
butary in Jordan, completely from
Israel.
General Rabin issued his warn-
ing in an interview in the Israel
Army publication, "Bamachaneh."
He asserted that `!Egyptian activi-
. ties in Jordan have created a deli-
cate situation there." He added
that, as long as Jordan did not be-
come "an Egyptian base in one
way or another." there was little
danger to Israel's security — but
that a joint military command
would constitute "a serious threat."
He also repeated a warning to
Syria that Israel would not remain
inactive in the face of provocations
or attempts at a "fait accompli."
He said "we will find means to en-
sure our rights, even if this re-
quires the use of arms."

costly refining process for use in
making such energy.
Dr.- Bergmann also reported that
six of the 11 papers by Israeli
scientists accepted by the scien-
tific secretariat of the United Na-
tions conference, will be presented
orally. Five of the Israeli papers
are included in the official archives
without reading. These papers will
seek to present the program of re-
search in Israel in the field of re-
actor physics and technology and
related subjects, a program which
Israel expects to provide the basis
for future large-scale reactor de-
velopment.
Dr. Bergmann said that the con-
ference was of special interest to
Israel because it was "about to
enter the field of large atomic
reactors. especially for desalting
'sea water."
Among the subjects treated in
the Israeli papers are new., meth-
ods for removal of nitric acids
from waste products of reactors,
the chemistry of elements higher
than uranium, which have become
available through operation of re-1
actors. and the theory of fast re-;
actors fueled with plutonium. Dr.
Bergmann said that successful ;
combination of natural uranium ;
and heavy water would yield plu-
tonium as a by-product.
