In a related development, a
leading Jewish theologian de-
nounced the new Ecumenical
Council draft as "not only inef-
fective but also profoundly in-
jurious" and one that could lead
to "spiritual fratricide." Dr.
Abraham Joshua Heschel, pro-
fessor of ethics and Jewish mys-
sticism at the Jewish Theological
Seminary, declared that any mes-
sage which regards Jews as can-
didates for conversion "pro-
claims that the destiny of Juda-
ism is to disappear." He said this

sentment."

pressed their desire to eradicate
sources of tension between Cath-
olics and Jews, will have an oppor-
tunity to vote on a statement which
will express this sacred aspira-
tion." The next session of the Ecu-
menical Council convenes Sept. 14.

Dr. Heschel expressed the "pro-
