WHERE? EVER EAT AT GIULIO'S? . . . It's the type of place you wouldn't want to bring too many people unless yau've been there before ... Res. After that you have quite a selling point in the fact that looks can be deceiving . . . Giulio's serves only about 40 people at a time and is located in what was formerly a store . . . The food, authentic Italian, is excellent, with every- thin; cooked to order in an excep- tionally clean kitchen . . . It is an unusual and different taste treat , . . . Many of the dishes are most usually not to be found anywhere . and the prices are quite reas- onable . . . Giulio's is located on Mitchell off Gratiot . . . If you go there with others. don't let them refuse to try the place . . . we thirik you'll like it ... The capacity being so small, we advise that you call ahead. THE BUTCHER'S INN comes by its name honestly. for it is a favor- ite hangout for thirsty butchers who dash into the place all day long for a "quickie" from the packing and slaughter houses in the neighborhood . . . It is always something of a shock for newcom- ers when they see their first butcher. dressed in bloodstained smock, down a shot of whisky and : bolt out the door . . . One of De- troit's most interesting restaurants. Butcher's Inn is also one of its most unprepossessing and hardest to find . . . With a little diligent searching. it al'way's turns up and the search is well worth the effort . The ancient red brick structure has been a restaurant for some 20 years . . . - Before that," . Maggie McLeroy, proprietor with hubby Jim since 1949. hints darkly, "it was a blind pig, gambling house and lord knows what else." . . The. fare at Butcher's Inn is simple and good and. leans heavily to beef . . . In lieu of a simple map with compass, these directions will have to suffice for finding Butch- er's Inn . . . It is on the northwest corner of Riopelle and Winder. one block east of the Eastern Market and one block north of the junc- tion of Gratiot and Vernor . . . Like everything else about Butch- er's Inn. the hours are unconven- tional . . . Check before going there. THE CLAM SHOP, 2675 E. Grand Blvd.. is another of those little restaurant gems that seem to abound in Detroit's aging fac- tory and warehouse district . . • The building is an ancient struc- ture, originally put up by a well- known brewery way-way back be- fore prohibition . . . In those days, we are told, the bartenders and breweries all but dragged the cus- tomers in off the street to drink beer for a nickel and partake of the free lunch . . . The interior is plain and clean and the floor dips gracefully here and there . . .1 The kitchen is very likely not as big as the one in your home or apartment, but the seafood that comes out of it is thought by some to be among the finest . . . As the name implies, the Clam Shop is devoted to those who believe that all that is good comes from the sea . . . The proprietors of the Clam Shop are Frank Van Brus- selen and David Goldfine . Dave bought the place almost 20 years ago and Van Brusselen joined him in the ownership 10 years later... Neither man had any prior restau- rant experience.
