LETTER BOX

Ussishkin's Name

Editor. The Jewish News:

In your comment "Ussishkin's
Name—Menahem, Without an Ap-
pendix" (Aug: 14i, you suggest
that Menahem Ussishkin "had no
middle name" *and that it is an er-
ror to call him Menahem Mendel
Ussishkin.
Is this an error?
I have consulted quite a few
books by Theodor Herzl, Nahum
Sokolow. Chaim Weizmann, A.
Bein. T. Nussenblatt, Raphael Pa-
tai. Adolf Boehm, Leon Simon,
Meyer W. Weisgal and Protocols of
various Zionist Congresses, etc.—
in all of which he is named "Mena-
hem Mendel Ussishkin" or "Mena-
chem M. Ussishkin." Joseph Klaus-
ner, his biographer, gives him two
"Appendices" and he starts the
biography with the following
words: "Abraham Menahem (Men-
del), son of Reb Moshe Zvi Ussish-
kin . .
But it is true that he prefered to
sign himself "Menahem Ussish-
kin." "M. Ussishkin" or "Michael
Ussishkin."
Theodor Herzl, in his novel
"Old-New Land," immortalized him
under the name of "Mendel."
And what is wrong with "Men-

der'?
Which reminds me of Prof. Selig

Brodetsky. Ben Gurion asked him',
to hebraize his name. But he re-
fused. With this good Jewish name
he even became a professor at
Leeds University. Why should he
change it in Israel? To make his
career easier?
Menahem Mendel Ussishkin has
been quoted in Zionist history for
the last seventy years—why should
the middle name Mendel now be
left out?
Yours sincerely,
JOSEF FRAENKEL,
London, England.
Editor's Note: My article was
based on a statement to me by
Ussishkin complaining about being
called "Menahem Mendel." Is there
a better final arbiter on this issue
than Ussishkin himself?—P.S.

the same bus routes happened to
be Jews. Would I then be justi-
fied in protesting the de facto
segregation on my bus resulting
from residential patterns? Or sup-
pose that my non-Jewish neighbors
decided to boycott the trains to
which they rind I had equal access.
Am I to demand the forcible travel

of a certain proportion of non-
Jews in the public conveyences

which I may freely use? The sug-
gestion is obviously nonsensical
for, though I may rightly deplore
the bigotry and malice of my fel-
lows, my right is to the non-

can it object to a preponderance
of its own people?"
Miss Syrkin states that the self-
respect of a minority requires that
it concentrate on legitimate rather
than peripheral goals; for the
Negro minority in the North this

means the equality of education,

housing and job opportunities.

There is a general shortage of
manpower in Israel, particularly in
all professions and skills, espe-
cially in many of the newly estab-
lished localities.

or ethnic origin. Through this

reductio ad absurdum I wish to
raise the larger question as to
whether the cry of de facto segre-
