The `Golem'

In the Bible (Psalms 139:16 ■ the
term is used to indicate an "em-
bryo" or what can generally be re-
ferred to as an "unformed sub-
stance." The Mishnah (Aboth 5:9)
uses the term Golem as a contrast-
ing term to. that Which expresses

the concept of a "wise man." A
Golem, in current usage, is usually
a person who lacks intelligence or
savoir-faire. We find the Talmud
stating that Adam was first
created as a Golem (Hagigah 12a).
This infers the idea of a mass with-
out form or intelligence. In medi-
eval times. the notion of a Golem
began to represent a mystical be-
ing. similar to • a human figure,
whose body was shaped of wood
or clay by man. Life was suppos-
edly infused into this figure by

of the Almighty by writing it on
a piece of paper which was placed
either on the forehead or in the
mouth of the Golem. thus making
it subject to the will of its maker.
Solomon ibn Gabirol is said to
have made a maid servant by this
process. Elijah of Chelm was said
to have created such a figure,
which became a monster, in the
16th Century. The most widely
known Golem of this type was that
of Rabbi Judah Low, of Prague,
otherwise known as the Maharal
of Prague: He is si:jd to have
created a Golem whic-h was active

would take the mystical paper out
of its mouth every Friday after-
noon. The Russian 'Rabbi David
Jaffee is said to have made a Go-
lem in the 19th Century to 'serveas
one who would do the necessary
work on the Sabbath prohibited to
Jews. _
