Kennedy Book
on Immigration
Due Off the Press

President John F. Kennedy's last
literary effort, a book he was work-
ing on at the time of his assassina-
tion, will be published by Harper
and Row Oct. 7. It has an introduc-
tion by Robert F. Kennedy.
Titled "A Nation of Immigrants,"
the book is a revision and expan-
sion of a booklet written in 1958
by the then-Sen. Kennedy for
the One Nation Library series of
the Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith.
It reviews the history of succes-
sive waves of immigration to the
United States, changes in immigra-
tion policy, and offers President
Kennedy's critique of the Immigra- •
tion and Nationality Act of 1952,
which is still in effect.
Calling the book "a testament to
a cause President Kennedy cher-
ished and which we should carry
on," Robert F. Kennedy says in
his introduction that "our present

unfair system of choosing immi- •
grants we will allow to enter the

United States . . . is a source of
embarrassment to us around the
world."
The documented and illustrated
book tells what immigrants have
done for America and what Amer-
ica has done for immigrants. In
a section on the discriminatory na-
tional origins quota system, Presi-
dent Kennedy called for a "gen-
erous . . . fair . . . and flexible"
immigration policy which would
en%ble the United States to "turn
to the world. hnd to our own past.
with clean hands and a clean con-
science."
