World's Fair Corp. Postpones Party
Scheduled for the - Jewish New Year
NEW YORK ( JTA ) —The World's that Jewish administrative em-

Fair postponed a party for the 30,-
000 fair employes, previously
scheduled for Sept. 7,. the first
day of the Jewish New Year, to an
unspecified date in October.
The American Jewish Congress
had protested the scheduling as
unfair to the many Jewish em-
ployes at the Fair. AJC expressed
gratification over the new deci-
sion by the World's Fair authori-
ties.
Schools and administrative of-
fices of the New York City Pub-
lic School system will be closed
on Yom Kippur, Wednesday, and

excused an hour earlier than usu-
al on the day preceding Yom
Kippur, the board of education
announced.

New York Rabbis
Condemn Services
at Holiday Resorts.

"The mass exodus of tens of
thousands of families to popular
resorts and country hotels during
the most sacred period of the He-
brew calendar" was labeled as "de
grading" in a Rosh Hashanah ser-
mon delivered by a prominent
New York rabbi.
The sermon by Rabbi Israel Mar-
golies of Bet Am, the People's
Temple, was only one facet of the
campaign being waged on vacation
resorts holding High Holy Day
services. Behind the campaign is
the . New York Board of Rabbis,
central body for all branches of
Judaism.
Under criticism were "make-
shift" synagogues at lakes and
mountains and the "blatant adver-
tisement" that violates "every pro-
priety and religious sentiment of
our people."
Jews were urged to observe
the High Holy Days in their own
neighborhood temples and syna-
gogues rather than in "places
where the sacred spirit of the
High Holy Days is diluted and
where the atmosphere is per-
meated by forces that do not
make for the spiritual elevation
which is the purpose of these
days.",
Rabbi Margolies decried those
"self-indulgent parodies of Amer-
ican Jewry" who "seek a .conveni-
ent way to enjoy an additional va-
cation, and, at . the same time,
make some superficial gesture of
obeisance to tradition in a night
club or dance hall temporarily
converted into a place of worship."
He went on: "This sacrilege
transforms the High Holy; .Days
quite literally into Hi-De-Ho-Ly
days for large numbers of 'carous-
ing men and women who are a dis-
grace to the .ancient name they
bear."
