The frontiers of the desert are being pushed back by Israel's
large-scale development program in the Negev which is being financed
with the aid of Israel Bonds. Photo above shows construction in
progress of the first permanent housing units in Arad. The wilder-
ness is being tamed through systematic reclamation and building
activities designed to make room for the settlement of new immi-
grants and for the redistribution of some sections of the population
now concentrated in Israel's coastal plain.

Open the Gates

From the Nellah Service — By
an Unknown Medieval Poet —
Open the gates—the gates of the
Temple,
Swift to Thy sons, who Thy truth
have displayed,
Open the gates—the gates that are
hidden, •
Swift to Thy sons who Thy law
have obeyed.
Open the gates of the coveted
Temple,
Swift to Thy sons who confess
• and seek grace.
Open the gates of the armies celes-
tial,
Swift to Thy sons, Judah's tearful
eyed race.
Open the gates—the radiant portal-
Swift to Thy sons who are
lovely and pure.
Open the gates—of the crown of
fidelity,
Swift to Thy sons who in - God
rest secure.
