It is customary to eat a bit of
honey on Rosh Hashanah, symbolic
of the prayer for a happy new year.
Also some of the pious have the
Yom Tov challeh in the form of
a ladder, symbolic of the Rosh
Hashanah prayers ascending to
Heaven.

One Rosh Hashanah, which hap-
pened to fall on the Sabbath, Reb
Itzchak Leib of Berditchev arose in
the pulpit and addressed God,
pleading with Him that He in
scribe the Jews for a gOod year.
If not. he reminded God, he would
not allow God to do any inscribing
at all and the Ribono Shel Olam
would have to obey. since no writ
ing is permissible on the Sabbath.
(According to the Torah, Go4 also
rests on the Sabbath.

The Rabbi of Berditchev once
had great difficulty in finding a
proper Shotar blower. He tried out
one man and another but somehow
none found favor in his eyes. Then
one poor man came up and applied
for the job. "Why do you want to
blow the Shofar?" asked the Rabbi.
"Well, I'll tell you," said the poor
man. "I have three daughters and
I need dowries for them and I was
thinking maybe if I would blow
the Shofar. God would take con-
sideration-of my problem."
The poor man got the job.
Among pious Jews it is the cus-
tom before the High Holy days to
seek out those with whom one h
quarreled or .had differences and
ask their forgiveness. The Talmud
tells of one ancient sage who used
to go in the vicinity of those he
had had trouble. with and circulate
around hoping his "enemy" would
meet him half way.
