Colda Meir Deplores
`Adventurers' in Congo

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM—Mrs. Golda Meir,
Israel's foreign minister, casti-
gated Tuesday "mercenaries and
adventurers in the Congo who sell
their honor and carry arms for
gain." She spoke at a meeting of
the African envoys called to dispel
rumors that Israelis were serving
as mercenaries in the Congo-.

Mrs. Meir expressed "revulsion"
oxer such mercenary activities and
said that Israeli aid programs in
construction, farm and administra-
tive training, which were started
during Premier Adoula's admin-
istration, were being continued.

The rumors were sparked by the
death of Joseph Eshet, 29, an
Israeli airman who was killed last
Friday in the crash of a Belgian
plane carrying munitions. The air-
man was reported to have been an
employe of Sabena, the Belgian
airline which assigned him to its
subsidiary, Air Congo.

E. Germany Abolishes
Witnesses Tell of Atrocities
Statute of Limitations
in Testimony at German Trials for Nazi Criminals

JTA Teletype Wire

(Direct

'Witnesses at war crimes trials in
Germany continued to pour out
stories of sadism on the part of
Nazi officers at AuschWitz and in
other parts of occupied Europe
during World War II.
In Munich. a witness at the trial
fof former SS Gen. Karl Wolfe
testified Monday that an SS man
casually shot an elderly Jew in the
Warsaw ghetto to give a "corpse
collector" something to do. Wolfe
is on trial on charges of aiding in
the killing of 300.000 Jews in War-
saw during the Nazi occupation.
Ladek Frajman. now a Munich
salesman. said in his testimony
that once while smuggling food
into the Warsaw ghetto he dis-
guised himself as a corpse collector
pushing a barrow used to carry
corpses.
The SS man, noting that the
barrow was empty, stopped him
and asked him if he had no work
to do. The witness testified that
when he replied in the negative,
the SS man took him to the elderly
Jew, shot the Jew on the spot and
then said to the witness "Now
you have some."

In Frankfurt. one of the de-
fendants in the Auschwitz camp
personnel war crimes trial once
beat a Jewish prisoner to death
to demonstrate to a camp trusty
how it was done. a Polish former
clerk at the camp testified.
Erwin Bartel. _41, the former
clerk. said that, one day in 1942.
defendant Hans Stark. a Gestapo

THE CALL
OF THE SHOFAR

man, took him to one of the JeWish
barracks. Bartel said the Gestapo
guard selected two Jews and told
them to kneel.
Then Stark told the chief bar-
racks trusty to kill them. Bartel

said that the trusty asked how it
was done, and Stark picked up a
chair leg and smashed away at the
neck of one of the Jewish prisoners

until he was dead.
Bartel testified that Stark then
said to the trusty "Now you know
how."
The court also heard testimony
that the horrors of Auschwitz once
proved more than even an SS man
could stand. Tadeus Szewczuk, a
Polish witness, testified that a non-
commissioned SS officer suffered
a nervous breakdown while select-
ing victims for gassing on the Bir-
kenau ramp of the camp.
The witness, now a Krakow!
pharmacist, testified that the offi-

cer walked away from his post,
yelling "do with me what you like
but I won't do any more ramp
duty." He said the officer stripped

off•his belt, gun and steel helmet
and threw them away.

Kurt Becher, a former Nazi
SS colonel who is now a prosper-
ous Bremen merchant, told a
Frankfurt court that Hermann
Krumey, a wartime aide of mass
murderer Adolf Eichmann, had
sought to rescue as many Jews
as possible from the Nazi's an-
nihilation program.
Testifying at the trial of Krumey
and Otto Hunsche, another former
SS officer. on charges of complicity
in the murder of 430,000 Hungar-
ian Jews, Becher related an inci-
dent in which SS chief Heinrich
Himmler ordered the release of
1.700 Jews to Switzerland in 1944,

as a "token of SS goodwill" in
negotiations with the Allies.
He said that Krumey blocked

attempts by Eichmann to have the
trainload of Jews rerouted to Ber-

gen-Belsen death camp.
Becher also told the court that
he held secret talks with a per-
sonal representative of President
Roosevelt in 1944, to try to arrange
for an exchange of Hungarian Jews
for shipments of Allied goods.
He identified the representative
as Ross McClelland, an American
Quaker. He said he met him in

. Awake, ,ye slumberers, from your sleep,

examine your deeds and humbly return to

God, the source of justice and truth. All ye

who are absorbed in foolishness and forget

yourselves, ye who pass your day in empti-

ness, remember your Creator, look into your

soul, and amend your ways. Forsake your

impure thoughts and your wicked deeds, and

follow kindness and righteousness.

Pillar of Fire and Sinai

From Otzar Midrashim

Between Passover and Shavuot
God did unto Israel what He did
in the six days of Creation. On
the first day He created dry land
out of the sea; thus did ,He do
when He turned the Red Sea into
dry land. On the second day He
created the expanse; thus also did
He create the clouds of glory and
s pread them out over Israel. On
the third day He created food-
bearing plants; thus for Israel He
sent down the manna. On the
fourth day He made the great
lights, and thus for Israel He
"made the Pillar of Fire. On the
fifth day He created the birds, and
for Israel He sent down the quails.
On the sixth day He spoke with
Adam, and with all Israel He
spoke at Sinai.
