Community Mourns Passing: of Noted
Hebrew Educator Abraham Lachover

An entire community joined this
week in mourning the passing of
one of its finest Hebrew educators,
who distinguished himself in many
fields of endeavor—Abraham J.
Lachover.
Mr. Lachover, 17300 Stoepel,
died Aug. 27 at the age of 60.
Funeral services were held last
Friday at Kaufman Chapel. Sur-
viving him are four sisters, Mrs.
Herbet J. (Betty) Pevos, Mrs. Celif
Lakofsky, Mrs. Jacob (Esther)
Gosevitz and Mrs. Lillian Rose;
and three brothers, Sam and
David Fleischman of Detroit and
Ben of Los Angeles.
His wife, the former Rose Lober,
died a year and a half ago. She
was an outstanding educator in her
own rights and an able artist. His
brother, Morris Lachover, a prin-
cipal of one of the Hebrew school
branches, died three years ago.
Mr. Lachover was noted in many
areas. He was a devoted Zionist
and served as president of the
Jewish National Fund Council of
Detroit.
He was active in the Labor Zion-
ist and other branches of the Zion-
ist movement. assisted in many
causes, including the .Keren Haye-
sod in its early days of efforts for
the Jewish National Home in Pal-
estine; for the Histadrut and other
movements; and aided many ef-
forts in support of Israel, having
been active also in the Allied
Jewish Campaigns. He was active
in. Kvutzah Ivirth before whom he
lectured often.

ABRAHAM J. LACHOVER

His major achievements were
in the field of Jewish education.
He developed new methods of
teaching Hebrew and shortly be
fore his death had perfected a
correspondence course for stu-
dents of the. language.
He taught many hundreds of
prominent Detroiters and to the
very end had not only taught in
the United Hebrew Schools but
also gave lessons. He conducted
classes for adults and encouraged
the study of Hebrew by non-Jews
as well as Jews.
He was a linguist and he was a
master of Yiddish. One of the high-
lights of his career dates back 30
years when he was told that the
many Yiddish-speaking patients of
that era who utilized the •services
of North End Clinic on Holbrook
could not be understood by the
non-Jewish nurses and social work-
ers. He immediately organized a
class in Yiddish for the non-Jewish
girls and his effort was a nation-
wide sensation for the results he
had attained.
A graduate of Central High
School, Mr, Lachover earned de-
grees froth the former College
of the. City of Detroit, where he
received his bachelor degree;
University of Detroit where he
earned his law degree, and his
masters i n education from
Wayne State University.
At the time of his death he was
on the faculty of the Midrasha
College of Jewish Studies. He form-
erly also was principal of the
Hebrew High School.
