CANTOR JACOB H. SONENKLAR

of that community, ZvilHershWine-
man, became. ill. That was in 1914.
Prior to that-time, Cantor Wineman
had given the young Sonenklar the
important assignment of serving as
his assistant. choir director. He
had become attracted to the youth's
fine voice when he was 10 and
Jacob Sonenklar was called to
assist Cantor W,ineman as a child.
Sonenklar's father was a shohet in
Borszczow.
"I recall with affection my ap-
prenticeship under Cantor Wine-
man," Cantor Sonenklar said.
"He gave me my formal training.
I take pride in the certificate he
gave me, accrediting me a Can-
. tor."
Sonenklar became cantor of Tar-
noff and served there until the end
of World War I—with a two-year
intermission when he served. in the
Austfian army. He was stationed
in Vienna and became. a student of
the Vienna Conservatory of. Music
where he specialized in secular and
operatic music. He then took a
position in Radautz. Bukowina, and
there he married his first wife,
Pearl, who died in 1958. She had
been active in Detroit with her hus-
band in numerous movements.
Cantor Sonenklar was called to
Congregation Dorshe Tov in Chi-
cago 43 years ago. After three
years with that congregation, he
was called to the post of Chicago's
largest congregation, Anshe Emet,
and served there with the late
Rabbi Solomon Goldman.
It was due to the depression, he
explains, that he left that large
synagogue to come to Cong.
Shaarey Zedek in Detroit 33 years
ago. The committee that called on
him in behalf of the Detroit syna-
gogue consisted of Maurice H.
Zackheim, the late Isaac Shetzer
and the late Morris Shatzen.
During his eventful career in
this community, Cantor Sonenklar
has rendered many scores of
services, all of them gratis. He
conducted large choirs for the
United. Hebrew Schools, for the
Zionist movement, for the Can-
tors' Association which he organ-
ized and over which he presided
numerous times.
He was especially distinguished
in Zionism, was a volunteer as
worker, as membership solicitor,
as program director.
He aided the Jewish National •
Fund and many causes, including
Allied Jewish Campaigns, and in 1
the course of his career be-came
known as "der Shtot hazen"---:•the
