AFTER. SPENDING the better
part' of a recent week in the na-
tion's Capitol, we are prepared to
report the following significant
trends . . . The chemise, or bag
look. has invaded the kitchen and
.Washington has about as many
good restaurants as Detroit ... We
were somewhat surprised to find
the chemise listed as something to
eat on the menu at the Colony

Restaurant
.
Our experience
with this article of high fashion
has been somewhat limited, but we
were intrigued by the thought of
"Filet de la Pompano en Chem-
ise." . . . This. a•kindly. waiter told
us. was filet of pompano in a bag
. . We tried it and it turned Out to
be pompano in a pancake type
envelope ... While Florida anglers
would have never recognized it, it
was delicious . . . On another eve-
: ning, we were fortunate enough to
be escorted to Goldie Aherne's ...
This is the Jack Dempsey's ,Rest-
aurant of Washington . . . Goldie
was not fighting that night. but
he can be justly proud of his
steaks, particularly the Chateau-
' briand for two . . . One of our
lunches was memorable .. . At the
men's bar in the Mayflower Hotel
we had a cannibal sandwich, our
first - . . A cannibal sandwich is
made from raw ground top sirloin.
onions, Worchestershire s a u
capers and a raw egg . . . The mix-
: ture is spread ,oh rye bread and
served . .. It takes a deal of cour-
age to get by the;first bite. but
after that you find you have em-
barked on a delightful eating ex-
perience.
SOLAS HARTSTEIN is doing a
wonderful' job since taking over
Baker's Keyboard Lounge on Liv-
ernois . . Its definitely the place
to go in Detroit' for jaiz . . . Oscar
Peterson, probably the greatest
jazz pianist in the world. and his
group has broken all house records
at Bakers .. The 1965 lineup has
already been set•for Baker's and is
considered to be the finest this
room has ever had . . . Names like
Gene Krupa, George Shearing.
June Christy, Peterson, Jonah
Jones and many others are among
the star-studded greats 'slated to
appear . . . The joint is really
rocking. as they say in jazz lingo,
and it couldn't have happened to
a nicer guy than Solas.
NO, THE NAME on this column
is not the final selection . . Next
week we will give all the names
that have been sent in and the
permanent pick will be made.
CARMEN CAVALLERO. Ameri-
ca's famed "Poet of the piano,"
opened a two-week stay at the
Roostertail last Monday . . . Shar-
ing the spotlight with Carmen is
newcomer Jennifer Marshall, a
beautiful and sophisticated singer.
TOO MANY DINING places un-
knowingly neglect probably the
most important facet of a good
place to eat . Service . . This
can many times make a meal good
or bad. Where some people take
it for granted, we are among the
many who look for pleasant and
efficient service when we go out
. . . Take the Crossroads Restaur-
ant on W. Seven Mile Rd. for ex-
ample. No waiting for a waitress
to take your order, and no time
lost in bringing your food . . . If
yoU're a coffee drinker, you'll
really enjoy the Crossroads . . .
Don't have to ask, just look at your
cup and it's always being filled!
Haven't been there at night yet
. . . its our next stop .. but those
who have are constant intheir
raves about the food, atmosphere
and entertainment
