Igor Stravinsky, the non-Jewish
composer who is new visiting in
Israel, stated in Jerusalem last
Friday that he would not permit
the singing of his new cantata,
"Abraham and Isaac," in langu-
ages other than Hebrew.
Based on the 12th chapter of
Genesis, Stravinsky's new compo-
sition is a sacred -allad which the
82-year-old composer has dedicated
to the Hebrew nation. The world
premiere of the ballad took place
in Jerusalem last SUnday.
"The only Hebrew word. I
know," the non-Jewish composer
said, "is shalom—peace—and I
say shalom to everybody. This idea
of peace is expressed in my work."
