THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Why Kashruth?

Most Jews are ready to offer
an explanation of the- Jewish Die-
tary Laws. Even those who dis-
regard them will offer a reason
for them, though
j
ihey may brush
that reason . aside as•being in their
view inadequate or unnecessary.

There are those who assert that
these are fundamentally health
laws. While there is much evidence
to support this contention, this is
not the reason Chat the Bible gives;

There are some . who look upon
these laws as expression of JeWish
folk custom. A' loyal Jew, desirous
of preserving the richness of the
historic national sanctities and
mores of his people. will adhere
to these observances as an essen-
tial part of his traditional Jewish
character,
A third explanation offered is
that observance of ;the Dietary
Laws is enjoined not only for their
positive enrichment of Jewish
ing, but also for their values in
preserving Jewish 'identity in a
non-Jewish environment. Shakes-
peare knew this when he made
Shylock say to Bassanio: "I will
buy with you, sell with you, talk
with you, walk with you, and so
following: but I will not eat with
you. drink with you nor pray
with you." The Dietary Laws set
up a needed line of demarcation
beyond which lies that more inti
mate social mixing that so readily
leads to mixed marriages 'and loss
of religious identity.
The. Bible gives one and only
one reason for them. That reason
is not one of physical or national
health but one of spiritual health.
It is contained in the: summing up
of the chapter in which these laws
are set forth: "I am the Lord
your G-d; therefore you shall make
yourselves holy, and be holy; for
I am holy . . . . For I am the Lord
who brought you up out of the
Land of Egypt to be your G-d ; ye
shall therefore be holy, fora I am
holy." (Leviticus (11:44, 45). This
motivation is repeated later (Levi-
ticus 20:25. 26): "You shall there-
fore separate between unclean
birds and the clean . . and ye
shall be holy unto Me, for I the
Lord am holy." In the repetition
of the Dietary Laws the' same sole
reason is given for their 'observ-
ance: "because thou are a holy
people unto the Lord thy G-d."
(Deuteronomy ;1,4:21).
The control exercised by ihe
Dietary Laws has taught the Jew
to make into a sacrament what ,
otherwise may readily degenerate,
into a wild party. He recognizes'
it as one of the functions of reli-
gious to take the crude material
of life and master it by .a religious
disciplining of physical appetites.
It is characteristic of Jewish Life
and teaching that one can catch
glimpses of p-d the kitchen
as well as in the synagogue, and
at the dining.table in the home as
well as at the altar in the House
of G-d.
This is why 'a spiritual ctiScipline
in holiness such as theibietarY
Laws, repeated several 'times a
day every day in the yeiir, is so
invaluable as a medium for bring-
ing G-d into our daily lives, for
stirring our conscience as Jews
and for •bringing us into the pre-
sence of G-d. We do not have to
wait for death to strike or for the
Day of Atonement or some other
great day in the' religious calen-
dar. All life becomes transfigured
by the consciousness 'of religion
for the Jews who disciplines his
living by the Dietary Laws.
The Jew draws no hard anta-
'gonizing ' lines between physical
and spiritual, between body and
soul, between earth and heaven.
Through the regulation of living
given by his discipline of diet,
physical- appetites become for him
a means of serving G-d, and the
family table becomes an altar.
Through • the Dietary Laws, the
Jew has learned how to suffuse
physical living with spiritual up-
lifting and to brix" ig the vision of
heaven to the dailypaths of earth.
