(34 Beacon, Boston 6) undoubtedly' will rate for many years to come as one of the very best novels published in 1964. It is a superb narrative about a lonely woman who has been torn between many conflicts—her par- ents 'and- their problems, her sev- eral lovers, her jobs, her em- ployer. Leah lives alone. Her parents had separated and she became the go-between, earrying messages from one to another. Her mother, in spite of her nagging, loves her husband, but they were so oppo- site that he , would not return and suddenly desires. to marry an other woman. Here, too ,Leah is the J. B. Her father is a frustrated writer encouraged by the new woman in his life who offers to pay for pub- lishing his book. That is how the picture becomes complicated, in- volving Leah further in her alone- ness. _ Leah had several jobs and is in her fifth year with Harry Bloch in Epstein's novel. She is valuable to Harry, whose in- herited hilliness is about to, col- . lapse, and she is offered-a new job in Harry's emerging new family affiliation. Accompanying his offer is another: that she become his mistress. He is turned down Ilk is persistent, and Leah's loneliness, her near- - despair grows.. There were others in her life, especially one passionate love af- fair; and who would have accepted ' David Kahn? His impotence, the growing problems in her life cause 1 her to reject him as she had;I others7--and at near-40 she is a sad person. She is not a weakling. She carries on, alternates between visit- ing mother and father, supports herself in her own apartment. In the long run, it is .a combination of depressing loneliness. "Leah" is an excellent novel, well written, depicting • life skil- fully. It enhances the literary career of Seymour Epstein. —P. S. There is not a man who does not suffer. — Midrash..
