First Bombay Lord Mayor Meyer Nissim, a prominent In- dian Jewish businessman, who lived in Bombay in the early part of this century, was the first Jew to serve as Lord Mayor of that city. 450,000 Jews in Argentina The Jewish community or Argen- tina, which dates back to the 16th century, now numbers some 450,000 persons, more than half of whom live in Buenos Aires. The Marranos BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright, 1964, JTA, Inc.) The term "Marranos" is applied to those Spanish Jews in the Four- teenth and Fifteenth centuries who, while being compelled to adopt Christianity outwardly, practiced Judaism secretly and remained faithful to their original religion. The term in Spanish means "swine" which indicates simply how little the Christians thought of such Jews. According to some authorities, the Jews retained the name "Marranos" because they felt it to be derived from the ex- pression "Maran Asa" wich means "Our Lord has come." This is the expression that the Marranos were forced to repeat on frequent oc- casions outwardly so as to publicly display their belief in Christianity. It should be remembered that not all the Marranos were alike. Some simply took advantage of the social prestige gained by their conver- sion, others avoided any publicity and courageously attended Syna- gogue services secretly. A third group made every effort to get out of the country in order to throw off the faith they had accepted by compulsion and return to Judaism. It is believed that over one hundred thousand Jews came under this category. Many thou- sands of them were killed during the Spanish Inquisition. The rabbis realized their tragic problem and, therefore, it is believed that the special formula recited before the Kol Nidre service giving permis- sion "to pray with the transgres- sors" refers to these Jews who, while openly becoming transgres- sors, inwardly retained their faith and thus were worthy of the Al- mighty's forgiveness when they confessed their sins and returned to their mother religion. It is be- lieved that the descendants of these Marranos can still be identi- fied. Against Asceticism By PHILO JUDEAUS Truth will properly blame those who without discrimination shun all concern with the life of the State, and say that they despise the acquisition of good repute and pleasure. They are only making grand pretensions, and they do not really despise these things. They go about in torn raiment and with solemn visage, and live the life of penury and hardship as a bait, to make people believe that they are lovers of good conduct, temperance and self-control. Therefore, be drunk in a sober manner. "The brain may devise laws for the blood, but a hot temper leaps o'er a cold decree." —Shakespeare THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, August 21, 1964 45 Shrinks Hemorrhoids Without Surgery Stops Itch--Relieves Pain For the first time science has found a new healing substance with the as- tonishing ability to shrink hemor- rhoids and to relieve pain - without surgery. In case after case, whil* gently relieving pain, actual reduc- tion (shrinkage) took place. Most amazing of all - results were so thor- ough that sufferers made astonishing statements like "Piles have ceased to be a problem!" The secret is a new healing substance (Bio Dynee) cover), of a world - famous research institute. This substance is now avail- - - able in suppository or ointment fors called Preparation He.
