Washington Correspondent Exposes Anti-Semitism's Sophisticated Turn BY MILTON FRIEDMAN (Copyright, 1964, JTA, Inc.) WASHINGTON —The national election has caused wide interest in the role of extremist right-wing groups, transcending the special- ized concern of Jewish groups. Front-page controversies focused general .attention on the accept- ance or rejection by presidential candidates and platforms of such movements as the John Birch So- ciety, Ku Klux Klan, and the White Citizens Councils. The daily press has been mainly concerned with anti-Negro prej- udice. Anti-Semitism, however, still exists in the extreme right, perhaps more dangerously than ever because it has gone under- ground. A new line has begun to emerge on the far right. The word "Jew" is replaced by euphemisms. Jews may be the "Eastern liberals," "Zionists," or even the "New York integrationists." In one case, ref- erences to the "Javits crowd" seemed to get the point across. Anti-Semitism is still around, but it has taken a sophisticated turn. Members of the John Birch Society have angrily denied ex- istence of anti-Semitism in their society. "After all," a typical Bar Assn. Fails to Back Liberal Immigration Bill NEW YORK (JTA) — Although two of its major sections urged re- form of the United States Immigra- tion and. Naturalization Act, to eliminate the national origins quota system, the American Bar Association, holding its annual meeting here, sidestepped such ac- tion by ordering the tabling of a resolution on the subject. The as- sociation's ruling House of Dele- gates adopted the tabling resolu- tion by a vote of 123 to 7. The two sections of the ABA which backed immigration law re- form were those dealing with in- ternational law and with adminis- trative law. Victor C. Folsom, of Boston, and Harry N. Rosenfield, of Washington, argued that Presi- dents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson supported legislation for the elimination of t h e national origins quota system. Under that system, northern European immi- grants are favored, although the northern European quotas are nev- er filled, while immigration quotas from southern and eastern Europe are always oversubscribed, Former Congressman Ed Gos- sett, of Texas, opposed the resolu- tion, demanding of the House of Delegates: "Haven't we got enough pipelines of poison into the Ameri- can bloodstream now, as it is, without letting in more?" Some of the opponents of the resolution fa- vored the present law, while others thought the ABA should not deal with the issue at all. The tabling resolution which was adopted was offered by Gov. Franklin Riter, of Utah, who held that the issue was "too remote" to require association action. Culture Foundation Finances Research in Mussar Movement NEW YORK (JTA)—Dr. Irving Greenberg, associate professor of history at Yeshiva College, an undergraduated school at Yeshiva University, has been awarded a $2,500 grant by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture for research into the practices and thoughts of the Mussar movement. Centered in Eastern Europe in the 19th century, the Mussar move- ment pertains to the ethics of certain sects of Orthodox Jews whose practices and thoughts are remarkably similar to those of the existentialists today. Dr. Green- berg hopes to point up these simil- arities in his research. Birchite might say, "we are for Barry Goldwater on his individ- ual merit, not because or in spite of his being half-Jewish." Anyone supporting a "half-Jew- ish" candidate, therefore, should be above suspicion as to prej- udice even though the same Birchite opposes immigration re- form, despises anti-defamation activities, loathes civil rights, and detests the State of Israel. Jewish groups have fought the Birch Society and other ultra-right formations because such political structures are the obvious breed- ing ground for Fascism and anti- Semitism. That is not to say that the John Birch Society openly ad- mits prejudice. Discrimination has become sophisticated to the point that "some of our best friends" have become "some of our best candidates." When Jews combat the Birch Society, • or the KKK, or White Citizens Councils, they are really fighting totalitarianism. Such groups, by their secret character and their tactics of conspiracy and character assassination, deny the basic principles on which the American society is based. The Senate Subcommittee on In- ternal Security, like its counter- part, the House Un-American Ac- tivities Committee, has focused 99 per cent of its attention on Com- munists and extremists of the left, and it became disturbed about the frequency of inquiries pertaining to the absurd, out-dated, fabrica- tion, the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion." The committee said it not only received inquiries about the "Protocols" from "sincere but misguided people." It actually was "even exhorte' to advert to this 'document- as a gurce of 'n- formation concern ' Commu- nist machinations." Although the "Protocols" have been exposed time and again as a viciously anti-Semitic hoax, the committee realized that individuals and groups in this country are still eager to blame "inter national Jew- ry" for all the world's problems. At the request of committee members Sen. Dodd, of Connecti- cut, and Sen. Keating, of New York, the Senate body issued a new study again debunking the "Protocols." The report quoted from a number of previous ex- poses. DRESS UP FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAY! Surwin's have elegant Holiday dresses, double knits, suits and fur stoles. Come see them. SURWIN ' S LOT G — NORTHLAND CENTER It was assumed that the sub- committee will now mail out copies of this new report to indi- viduals or groups urging Con- gressional action to save America from the Jewish "conspiracy." A psychiatric explanation of the durability of the "Protocols" is that anti-Semites do not really care if anti-Jewish material is untrue. Any myth is acceptable, as long as it confirms to pre-existing emotional conclusions. IT'S LOGICAL THERE IS ONE AT YOUR SERVICE! George Ohrenstein Jewelers 18963 Livernois • UN 1-8184 KAPLAN BROS.
