New Look for Radio City vide our patrons with the most

Richard Sloan, president of Sub-
urban Detroit Theaters, Inc., an-
nounces the completion of a com-
plete renovation program at the
Radio City Theater, Woodward at
9 Mile. '
Sloan stated, "We recognize that
as theater operators, we must pro-

modern technical facilities by the
industry, and just as important, all
of the new and up-to-date comforts
and conveniences." The current at-
traction at the "new look" Radio
City Theater is "Torn Jones," win-
ner of four Academy Awards, star-
ring Albert Finney.

But Very Bad Taste

Wallace Markfield is an excell-
ent writer. He has style, and wit,
and applies Jewish themes to his
story—the novel, "To An Early
Grave," published by Simon and
Schuster.
His parody on "Dayenu" is per-
haps the most noteworthy portion
of his novel. It is clever, well
written, denoting ability to make
use of traditional subjects and
folklore.
So many Yiddish terms are used
by Markfield that one would im-
agine he was compiling a diction-
ary of unusual words. Some are
not printable, others are "oysg-
amitched," "tahm ," "maydele,"
"shlimazzel," "betler," "hondle,"
"neshoma," and many others.
Yet, the plot annoys this re-
viewer, portions of the story prove
revolting, and the description of
the funeral emerges as a travesty.
The eulogy of the rabbi certain-
ly is not real, it is so long, it lacks
sincerity, it is sensationalized and
hardly lends dignity to a Jewish
story. Like a silly Jewish wake!
And to top it off—the fellows
came to the wrong funeral! What
a mess!
It is the story of the death of a
friend and the trek towards the
cemetery by the friends of the de-
ceased. On the way there is a
battle with the cab driver, and the
approach is marked by so much
indignity that one wonders what is
served by such a theme.
The story begins with Morroe
Rieff's tussle with his wife who
would not serve him juice for
breakfast. The lady then is desc-
ribed as yielding in love to many.
It ends with a return to her and
an offer of Jell-O!
The novel is commended as
being hilarious, and the, reader
wonders how humorists like Shod-
em Aleichem, Mark Twain, Will
Rogers and others wold accept a
story labeled as humor that is
filled with so much obscenity. Must
a brilliant writer resort to smut?
Or is this to be hailed as contemp-
orary literature? "To An Early
Grave" is, indeed, good writing,
but this reviewer judges the con-
tents as in bad taste.

Monroe at Roostertail

Vaughn Monroe, one of the
country's all-time great singing
stars, has one week left in his en-
gagement at the Roostertail sup-
per club. Organ whiz Marjorie
Meinert will augment the Chuck
Robinett orchestra in backing
Monroe.
Vaughn's show will include
many of the newest record and
Broadway hits, and he always in-
cludes most of the songs he made
famous, such as "Dance, Ballerina,
Dance," "Ghost Riders," "They
Were Doing the Mambo," "Sound
Off," and of course, "Racing with
the Moon."

Hazakah

The term "H a z a k a h" comes
from a Hebrew root indicating
"strength." The term is applied
in a number of ways. In Jewish
legal literature it sometimes means
the act of taking formal possession
of real property by physically
doing something to that property
(digging something, fencing some-
thing—an act which one wouldn't
do unless he owned the property
or was permitted to do so by the
owner). It also signifies the
"claim" of a person upon property
or upon certain rights which he
has been enjoying over a period of
time without protest. The term also
is used to indicate a "reputation."
It is also used to indicate a "pre-
sumption," which is to say that a
certain position is to be presumed
with assurance, usually because
of the nature of the circumstances
involved . . . The term "Hazakah"
indicates the "strength" of owner-
ship, reputation, possession, or pre-
sumption.
