`Rehabilitation' Aim Described b y Judge Geo. Kent Wiener Candidate Saide Pledges if Elected to Work for Legislature Irving H. Wiener announces his candidacy for State Representative for M. E. Peace Judge George B. Kent of the Common Pleas Court this week gave his reasons for his candidacy for the Recorder's Court. Describing his background as an assistant prosecuting attorney for 131!9 years, Judge Kent stated that his familiarity with the court's procedures as a result of his experiences lead him to be- lieve he is qualified to assist in implementing the recent changes in substantive and procedural law." He added: "If elected I shall endeavor to make necessary changes in proba- tion procedures so as to include the possibility of a rehabilitation program of offenders, so that they may become useful citizens in our society, rather than, as present, having merely a report system that is somewhat lacking in super- visory control of the individual. "The present system of the pro- duction line type of 'handling' misdemeanor cases does not offer an opportunity for the granting of a proper trial or hearing of these matters. nor the opportunity of the Judge to make a proper de- termination and/or sentence at the conclusion. I intend to rec- ommend that the so-called Early Sessions and Domestic Relations dockets be split and assigned to two Judges, rather than one as at present. "I advocate and will move for the institution of a Public De- fender system for indigent per- sons, rather than the present as- signment system of entrusting hu- man lives to perhaps young and inexperienced lawyers who do not have the time, energy, know-how, or investigative machinery avail- able to them to properly defend the rights of individuals involved in such serious matters." in the 16th District. Ostende. BY HENRY LEONARD Barry Repudiated by Congressman Halpern Copr. 1964, Dayenu Productions — mmesomm. Jack Faxon, Democratic candi- date for the nomination from the 15th Legislative District, indicated that one of his chief concerns in this campaign is adequate state support of education. Faxon, who is a high school teacher of American government and history, has been with the Detroit Public Schools since 1956 and has been active in many edu- cational organizations. During the Michigan Constitu- tional convention of 1961-62, Fax- on served as a member of the edu- cation committee and was not only the only delegate there to have had a perfect attendance record but also offered more proposals on education than any of the other members. Faxon stated: "Today, more than ever before, we must have people representing us in Lansing who are aware of the great problems that presently confront public edu- cation. The problem of inadequate schools for the growing population requires a concentrated program whose cost cannot and should not be borne alone by those persons paying property taxes. The State must be prepared to recognize the special problems of education in Detroit and to make the additional' compensations necessary to ma an educational program that would be meaningful to our young- people." Faxon continued to stress the need for a curriculum that woul prepare all young people for gain- ful employment. "Presently," he stated, "t many are graduating without a educational strong sufficiently background to enable them to meet the requirements for regular em- ployment."
