London Commerce
Chamber Rebuked
in. Mancroft Case
LONDON (JTA) — The London
Chamber of Commerce was ac-
cused of "running before it was
threatened" when it withdrew an
offer for Lord Mancroft, a prom-
inent British Jew, to stand for the
presidency of the Chamber. Earli-
er this year Lord Mancroft was
forced to resign as a director of
a British insurance firm under
pressure of Arab representatives
here.
The criticism of the Chamber
was voiced by one of its own mem-
bers, Hans Feld. The Chamber
secretary, William Luxton, told
Feld in a letter that some of its
officers asked Lord Mancroft not
to run for the presidency to avoid
controversy. He said the Chamber
was "under no pressure from
Arab countries or chamber mem-
bers dealing with the Arabs."
In his letter of reply to the
Chamber Feld said that if the
Chamber had not been subjected
to any pressure, it ran away even
before it could be threatened,
"surely not an edifying spectacle
for a representative body."
President of Brazil
Receives Delegation
from AJC Committee
BRAZILIA (JTA) — Brazil's
President Marshall Castelo Branco
received a delegation of leaders
of the American Jewish Committee
headed by Morris B. Abram, presi-
dent of the Committee.
In his greeting to the members
of the delegation, who began a
visit to Jewish communities in four
Latin American countries, Presi-
dent Branco hailed their mission
of goodwill and said that he was
convinced • "that world peace de-
pends on the improvement of hu-
man sentiments and also very
much on the improvement of poli-
tical institutions in every coun-
try."
President Branco pledged to "do
everything to improve the politi-
cal institutions and the education
of the people and to do my share
for world peace."
In his message to the Presi-
dent, Abram said that "as a
Jew, I learned by bitter experi-
ence that the best type of so-
ciety is a democracy where the
rights of all men are respected
independently of race and faith.
We come to South America in
a mission of goodwill to meet
our fellow Jews and to create
the means to help them in their
Cultural and educational pro-
grams."
The reception by President
Branco was the culmination of a
two-day visit to the Brazilian
capital during which the delegation
was also received by the Presi-
dent of the Supreme Court and
the presidents of the Brazilian
Senate and House of Representa-
tives.
The Brazilian press and the ra-
dio stations gave wide coverage to
the delegation's visit and hailed
the work of the AJC. The delega-
tion proceeded today to Rio de
Janeiro for a five-day visit in that
city.

Jerusalem 'Dialogue Reveals Rift Over
Dominance of Orthodox Groups in Israel
(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)
JERUSALEM — Sharp exchanges
over the viewpoints of the three
branches of American Judaism
were voiced by Israeli and Ameri-
can leaders of the orthodox, con-
servative and reform movements
Wednesday in the second session
of the "Dialogue" conducted here
by the American Jewish Congress.
Israel's chief chaplain, Rabbi
Shlomo Goren, told the meeting
that Israel would oppose the im-
portation of religious movements,
declaring that various Jewish reli-
gious groups in the United States
were a divisive rather than a unit-
ing force in Jewish life. "The Bible
-
cannot come from New York nor
the word of God from Cincinnati,"
he asserted.
Rabbi Goren's address was met
by a barrage of criticism by other
panelists. Prof. Gerson Cohn of
Columbia University, speaking in
Hebrew, said that most American
Jews cannot and will not become
orthodox and not merely because
they are looking for "comfortable"
religion. He said that while there
was concern about assimilation in
the United States, Rabbi Goren
had exaggerated its dimensions.
Will Maslow, executive director
of the American Jewish Congress,
told the gathering that orthodoxy
had a monopoly regarding Judaism
in Israel and urged that the issue
of religious freedom and individu-
al conscience receive greater at-
tention than hitherto.
