CARROLL BAKER portrays the
title role of "Sylvia," a shocking
story of a woman's struggle for
regeneration, from the novel by
E. V. Cunningham (pseudonym for
Howard Fast), with a screenplay by
Sydney Boehm. Production has
started at Paramount under David
Miller's (Captain Newman, M.D.)
direction, with George Maharis
essaying the part of a private in-
vestigator trying to discover the
truth about the enigmatic woman's
past.
"Sylvia" was written by Howard
Fast at a time it would have been
difficult for him to be published
under his real name. Another rea-
son for his pseudonym: with
"Sylvia" he delved into the genre
of pure entertainment, far removed
from his subjects of historical and
political significance.
Ann Sothern has been signed
for a co-starring role, that of a
penny arcade proprietress who
helps the private eye in his search
into the past of "Sylvia." Martin
Poll is producing.
Production of the picture has
been on and off for a long time.
Originally, it was announced that
Martin Ritt would direct from a
screenplay by Fast, and Paul New-
man would portray the detective.
After Jack Karp saw the rough-cut
of "The Carpetbaggers" late last
year, he immediately decided to
sign Carroll Baker (Mrs. Jack
Garfein) for the role of the mys-
terious "Sylvia," but everything
else was switched around until the
picture went before the cameras on
July 27, under Miller's guidance.
