New JPS Covenant Book Describes
Life of Samson Wertheimer and
'Court Factors' of 17th Century

Samuel Oppenheimer, the 17th
century financier to kings and
princes, was known as "The Court
Jew." His fate ended tragically.
More effective in his labors was
another personality of his time,
Samson Wertheimer (1658-1724),
who married into the Oppenheimer
family and who, after working for
Oppenheimer, became his competi-
tor and one of the powerful Jews
of his time.
The story of Wertheimer, "fin-
ancier to the Hapsburgs," is told
in the latest of the Jewish Publica-
tion Society Covenant Books: "The
Court Factor," by Alfred Apsler,
who had already written another
Covenant Book for JPS.
Wertheimer was a talmudic stu-
dent. Like his father, he was pre-
paring for the rabbinate, until he
had decided to become an assistant
to Oppenheimer and became inter-
ested in finance. He became
wealthy, gained the friendship of
Prince Eugen of Savoy, displayed
bravery in entering enemy ranks
to warn the prince's forces of im-
pending dangers and was resposi-
ble for the success of the Habs-
burg troops that prevented the
Turks from conquering Christian
Europe.
The term "Factor" is explained
by the author in an introductory
note in which he points to the
dangerous life that was lived by
Wertheimer w h o, nevertheless,
often came to the aid of oppressed
Jews. The author states:
"War was constant in those
days, yet no government had

what we now call a Quarter-
master Corps, or even a finance
department for its army. Such
matters as supplying the armies'
needs or paying the soldiers, all
of whom were mercenaries,
were entrusted to private busi-
nessmen called Factors, whom
the governments then repaid in
lump sums. It was a very risky
business, since a lost war meant
bankruptcy for the Court Fac-
tor. Moreover, sometimes, when
the sums due to the Factor
grew to vast size, the reigning
monarchs could easily accuse
their Factors of dishonesty and
refuse to pay. You could not
easily summon the Emperor to
a lawsuit. This is what happened
to Samuel Oppenheimer and to
other Court Factors."

Wertheimer's courage aided him
in his own behalf, assisted him in
securing Oppenheimer's release
from jail, provided him with means
of preventing the publishing of a
violently anti-Semitic book, "Juda-
ism Unmasked," written by one
of his former employees who be-
came a convert to Christianity.
It is no wonder that he was held
in high esteem, that he was elected
official Chief Rabbi of Hungary
and was honored by Jewish com-
munities.
On the cover of the new JPS
Covenant Book appear reproduc-
tions of the ring the Wertheimers
used at wedding ceremonies. It is
a treasured heirloom and the pho-
tographs were made available to
JPS for use on this book by Charles
E. Feinberg of Detroit.

C. I believe you. But it so happens
that I too like to look at the
view.

T. No doubt. "Every man for him-
self," nevertheless, there is a
reason for my strange request.

C. Such as? Why should I give up
my place to you?

T. You are a citizen of Israel. Tne
scenery of our country is fa-
miliar to you. However, for a
tourist, like me, time short,
and I have to absorb the beauty
of the country in a hurry.

C. That's an acceptable reason, al-
though it leaves room for argu-
ment.
Very well, (please) sir, take my
seat.
