There is genuine excellence in the producer's application of "Tevye der Milchiger" — "Tevye the Dairyman"—to this play, and Mostel, as Tevye, is superb. For a pre-Broadway showing, "Fiddler on the Roof" is most unique. It is almost faultless in its preparatory stages. While the rabbi could, as one critic states, be a more dignified representa- tive, it is such a minor criticism 1,411LATIMI NINIMINT PMEN* ) —WESTOWN= WYOMING AT FENKELL WE 3-7111 WED. AUG. 5 - WK. Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr and Sue Lyon star in "The Night of the Iguana," now showing at the Trans Lux Krim on Woodward near Six Mile. The picture is based on the prize-win- ning play by Tennessee Williams ZERO MOSTEL and was filmed on location in Mexico under the direction of John marked by the tragedies of pog- roms and the injustices that were Huston. imposed by the czars. The Sabbath eve ceremony is truly beautiful. The prayer could include some Hebrew, and that's a shortcoming. The "Le'Hayim" is used in a major song and there is resort to other Hebrew words. When Tevye sips his liquor with the butcher, he actually says "shehakol niyeh bidvoro." Why not also the "borei pri hagofen?" That's a suggestion for those who may be revising the text for Broadway. Except for such minor items and the regrettable emphasis on "ham" (instead of corned beef) in the printed program's sand- wich essay, Detroit's Fisher Thea- ter stands out as a pioneer in re- viving a Sholem Aleichem theme "MRS. BING" in prior to its going on to Broadway and possibly for endless return engagements in Detroit and else- where for years to come. That's how good Zero Mostel and his cast with are in "Fiddler an the Roof." JOHN LUPTON Some already have seen the show twice.
