'hotos Tell a President's Friendship Friedman's New
Book: Bad Taste
for the Reviewer

No one of presidential rank has ever demonstrated a more
cordial sympathy for Jews and Jewish causes than the man from
Independence, Mo. — and this can be documented from the files of
the American Jewish Archives on the Cincinnati campus of the
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Harry Truman,
the "Man of the Century" for the Israel Bond Organization, gladly
donned a yarmulka to attend a congregational breakfast in Kansas
City, and posed with a Yiddish newspaper at the outset of the
Kennedy administration. The picture collection of the American
Jewish Archives includes a photograph of Truman glancing up
amusedly from a copy of Der Tog-I1orgen Zhurnal, its headline
proclaiming in Yiddish: "Kennedy Sworn In Today As President."

Bruce Jay Friedman scored a
triumph with his earlier novel,
"Stern," which had good reviews,
welcoming an emerging skilled
writer among the new generation
authors. His newest work, "A
Mother's Kisses," published by
Simon and Schuster, puzzles us.
It is the story of a high school
graduate who applies for entrance
in several colleges including Col-
umbia, and has difficulties being
admitted until he is welcomed in
an agricultural school that ap-
parently doesn't have as much of
agriculture as of other subjects in
its curriculm.

Boston Community Jews
Plan Population Study

BOSTON (JTA)—With the 1964
campaign of the Combined Jewish
Philanthropies here completed, the
organized Jewish community of
Boston has turned to a number of
"looking ahead" projects, the most
important of which, on a commu-
nity-wide basis, will be the forth-
coming population study of
Greater Boston Jewry.
Under the chairmanship of Irv-
ing W. Rabb, a special Long-Range
Planning Commission is now pre-
paring to inaugurate the study
next fall.

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — Plans
for a 36-bed addition have been
approved by the Moss Rehabilita-
tion Hospital. The expansion plans
also include new therapy areas,
classrooms and other facilities,
calling for total expenditures of
$815,000.
