Why do some pious Jews put
on two pairs of Tefillin (Phyla-
cteries) every week-day morning,
instead of the usual single pair?
There seems to be a controversy
among the Talmudic Commenta-
ries as to the order of the four
paragraphs which are contained
in the Tefillin. Some, as for ex-
ample Rashi, follow one order.
Others, like his grandson, Rab-
benu Tam, follow another order.
There is an intense desire among
pious Jews to fulfill every aspect
of a commandment as is humanly
possible. Thus, in order to be sure
to fulfill the commandment of
wearing the Tefillin in which the
paragraphs are arranged like the

Why are there four distinct
paragraphs of the Bible that are
inscribed on the parchment that
is contained in the Tefillin?
There are four places in the
Pentateuch where the command-
ment of wearing Tefillin is men-
tioned. When the Bible writes
"These shall be for a sign upon
thine hand, etc.," the inference
is that these words, which contain
the commandment of Tefillin shall
be upon thine hands, etc. Thus the
f our paragraphs which contain
these four passages are inscribed
upon the parchments that are con-
tained in the black boxes of the
Tefillin.
