The word "Haskamah" general- ly means "approval," It became know as a special term to connote the foreword to Hebrew books which constituted 'an approval to have the book published, usually issued by noted rabbis. The Rab- binical Conference at Ferrera, Italy, in the 16th Century, enacted a law to the effect that all Hebrew writings had to be approved by three rabbis and a lay leader rep- resenting the community before they could be published. The pur- pose of this, it was said, was to censor the publication so as to be sure that nothing offensive to the ruling authorities of the area was written therein, so that no ill will would be aroused. Later, such fore- words were sought by authors as an endorsement of either their scholarship or piety. There was a reluctance to allow free circula- tion of Hebrew books lest even the Jewish reader be misled into erroneous conclusions regarding Jewish law and customs. ThesE forewords also served in earlier times, as a form of copyright, to prevent the reprinting of all parts of the publication before a certain length of time had passed. Acquires Manuscripts of Writer, Editor Charles Angoff The personal papers and manu- scripts of Charles Angoff, former editor of the American Mercury, novelist and chronicler of the American literary scene for the past 40 years, have been presented to the Boston University Library, Dr. Gustave A. Harrer of Newton, Mass., director of libraries , announced. The collection will be housed in Boston University's pro- posed $5,500,000 Central Library. The Angoff collection is rich in correspondence of Ezra Pound, George Jean Nathan, Henry L. Mencken, Floyd Dell, Sinclair Lewis, Sherwood Anderson, Thomas Wolfe, Eugene O'Neill, William Carlos Williams, Oswald Garrison Villard, James Branch Angoff 'ell, Art Young, Max Eastman, Ellery Sedgwick, Rollin Kirby, and many other letters. According to Dr. Howard B. Gotlieb of Boston, chief of the library's division of special collec- tions, through Angoff's papers it is possible to trace the literary battles which swept American writing from 1920 through the 1950s, including the furor over "humanism" and "proletarian lit- erature". The extent of Angoff's intellec- tual curiosity is illustrated by the files of his correspondence with Kaiser Wilhelm II and Emma Goldman, the anarchist, and by the fact that his writings, criticism, and lecturing have not only cov- ered the world of American lit- erature in general, but the world of Jewish-American letters, a field in which Angoff is considered the pre-eminent figure. Star Jewish Investigator Asks Check of Death Records VIENNA (JTA) — Simon Weis- enthal, head of the Jewish Docu- mentation Center for Nazi Crimes in Vienna, demanedd that the gov- ernments of Austria and West Ger- many check on the veracity of doc- uments recording the deaths of Nazi war criminals. He said that there had been cases in which the courts, acting in good faith but on false evidence, re- corded some of the criminals as dead when they were still alive somewhere abroad. He cited as an example the case of the Nazi police chief in Lublin, A. Globo- cznik. Weisenthal is generally credited with being the investigator who tracked down the late Adolph Eich- mann. More recently, his work led to the arrest of the Nazi officer who had arrested Anne Frank. What's a good way to build for a secure future for yourself and your country?
