Temple Israel Tee n, Charles Tobias, to Head National Youth Federation Leadership of the National Fed- eration of Temple Youth, repre- senting 22,000 young people in 600 Reform temples throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, will for the first time be vested in a young Michigan man. Charles Henry Tobias, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold S. Tobias, 16248 Sherfield, Southfield, was elected to suc- ceed Kenneth Kudisch, of New- t o n ,Mass., as NFTY president. Tobias, at 19, one of the young- est presidents e- lected by NFTY. will enter hii sophomore year ;n September at Tobias the University of Michigan, where he is a pre-medical student. During the previous year, he was second vice president of NFTY. At present, Tobias is in Cleve- land, Ga., conducting a leadership institute at one of the camps operated by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, with which NFTY is affiliated. A graduate of Temple Israel high school, he has been active in youth group work since his earlist years with temple's youth group. He attnded its religious school for 13 years, being a member of the first blessing class in the first building in 1950. Tobias served as president of the Michigan State Temple Youth, one of 22 regions which comprise NFTY. As president, he will maintain liaison between the regional officers and the natoinal office in New York. He will represent youth on the executive board of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and will sit as a member of the social action commission of the UAHC. In mid-August he will attend the annual summer conclave of NFTY • sponsors a Mitzvah Corps, a group of young men and women who work in Puerto Rico and in New York as part of a seven-week summer program of teaching young Puerto Ricans basic studies. Tobias' father is president of the Temple Israel Men's Club, and his uncle, Julian S. Tobias, is president of Temple Israel. * * * Temple Israel Names Membership Chairman; Plans New School Branch Morton J. Bechek has been ap- pointed chairman of the member- ship committee of Temple Israel, it was announced by Julian S. Tobias, Te mple president. Nath- an King will serve as cochair- man. Bechek an- nounced that Te mple Israel will open a branch of its Sunday re- ligious school this September, at the Bechek Lederle School, Southfield. Mid-week Hebrew school will continue at the Clinton School in Oak Park. Classes also will continue at the temple. A past president of the Temple Israel Mens Club and currently a member of the congregation's board of trustees, Bechek has been active in Boy Scout work for many years, is a past officer of Louis Marshall Lodge, Bnai Brith, is a member of Perfection Lodge, F.&A.M., and is now president of the Crescent Shrine Bowlin g League. Rabbi Jack Goldman, former spiritual leader of Cong. Anshei Sphard of Memphis, Tenn., has been appointed director of public relations and fund raising of Beth Yehuda Schools, Max Biber, chairman of the executive committee of the schools, announc- ed. Goldman will supervise the public relations activities of the schools. which comprise six Jew- ish educational institutions in De- troit and Oak Park. He is a graduate of four schools and divi- sions of Yeshiva University in New Rabbi Goldman York, was grad- uated magna cum laude from Yeshiva College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1953, majoring in Latin and Greek, received his rab- binical ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Semin- ary of Yeshiva University in 1958, and pursued courses at the Ber- nard Revel Graduate School and the Harry Fischel School for Higher Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University and at the Memphis State University Graduate School. Prior to being ordained, Rabbi Goldman was associated with the department of public relations and the school of education and com- munity administration of Yeshiva University for six years. He was rabbi of congregations in Phillips- burg, Pa., and Jacksonville, Fla., prior to his last rabbinical position. While in Memphis, he was instru- mental in the development of a Hebrew language studies depart- ment at Memphis State University, which ultimately he headed, teach- ing Hebrew in the modern lan- guages department for two years. Rabbi Goldman is a noted lec- turer on Hebrew language and lit- erature. He has written numerous articles on Jewish life, culture and history, in various scholarly and popular journals and periodicals. Rabbi Goldman comes to Detroit with his wife, the former Liela Hirsch of Brooklyn, and their three children. June 18 for demonstrating against racial segregation have issued a joint letter, "Why We Went." Of the group, 15 were arrested while praying in an integrated group in front of a restaurant. The other two were arrested for sitting at a table with three Negro youngsters in another restaurant. The first draft of the letter was penned . in their cell. Council of Syna- gogues at its fifth international convention here. Scoblionko suc- ceeds Charles Rosengarten of Waterbury, Cann., who served as president of the global organization since its incep- tion in 1957. The convention dealt with vari- ous aspects of synagogue life in countries around the world. The World Council embraces congre- gations of the Conservative movement, and has affiliates and associates in 22 countries. Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff of Rome did not deliver a Scoblionko scheduled speech on the forthcoming Ecumenical Council as the convention agenda had listed. He said, in Rome, the subject, "The Ecumenical Council and Its Meaning to Judaism" had been planned without his knowl- edge. He did not participate in the convention.
