World Jewry Invited by Shah of Iran
to Help Observe 2,500th Anniversary
of the Empire's Founding by Cyrus
TEHERAN (JTA)—World Jew-
ry has been invited by the Shah
of Iran to participate in the forth-
coming celebration here of the
2,500th anniversary of the found-
ing of the Iranian Empire by Cy-
rus the Great, according to an an-
nouncement by Jamshzd Kashfi, a
member of the Iranian Parliament.
The invitation, he said, was ex-
tended to Dr. Henry Raphael Gold,
New York psychiatrist and Tal-
mudic scholar, who was received
by the ministry of the Shah's
court. The Shah's hope that Jewry
would play a role in the celebra-
tion was relayed to world Jewry
through Dr. Gold.
Cyrus the Great, who conquered
the Babylonians in the year 539
.before the Christian era, had im-
mediately restored to the Jews the

Ben-Zion Amarant:
Young Israel Hero
Ben-Zion Amarant spent the
first 14 years of his life in misery
on a kibbutz outside Haifa, suffer-
ing from a heart disease which
caused constant headaches and
difficulties in standing, and pre-
vented him from taking part in
the normal activities of the
kibbutz.
The American Physician's Fel-
lowship for the Israel Medical
Association made possible a six-
hour operation at the Children's
Medical Center in Boston. It was
declared a complete success. The
boy's doctors assured him that
he could even realize his fondest
dream, that of being a soldier in
the Israeli army.
After he returned to the kib-
butz, Ben Zion participated in
sports and hiking trips, attended
vocational school and ran the
kibbutz tractor.
When he was 17, Ben Zion re-
ceived his parents' permission to
join the army. Early in 1963,
he attended a six-month training
course as a jet plane mechanic,
and passed the final examination
with honors.
In December, less than a month
away from reassignment to a re-
sponsible position, Ben Zion was
killed in an accident while on
night duty at his air field, dying
for the cause that had given him
the will to live.

Is it necessary for one to
wear the undergarment to
which the Tzitzith are attached
upon going to bed (Le, what is
commonly called "Talith
Katan?")
Moses Isserles (The R'ima)
in his gloss to the Shulchan
Orach (Orach Chayyim 21:3)
conveys the idea that there is
an opinion amongst the auth-
orities that one should de-
finitely not wear his garment
to bed. Others report that Isaac
Luria (The Ari Hakodosh) con-
sidered it a custom to wear this
garment to bed. It is thus
evident that there is a differ-
ence of opinion on the subject.
It appears that the Rabbis in
general forbid this practice
while some Kabbalists have ad-
vocated or at least permitted it.
The reason for which this prac-
tice is forbidden follows two
main courses of reasoning.
First, the Bible (N umbers
15:39) indicates that the fringes
are worn in order that one
reminds himself, when he looks
upon them, of the command-
ments of the Almighty. Thus,
they are to be worn only when
one can be reminded—and one
can surely not be reminded by
these Tzitzith when he is asleep.
Secondly, Jewish tradition is
cautious of adding to the re-
quirements set by the Almighty.
This is based on a Biblical
commandment (Deuteron omy
4:2) which says: "Ye shall not
add unto the thing which I
command you . . " Since we
accept the view that Fringes
are not required at night
(Maimonides, etc.) wearing
them to bed would be an open
demonstration that we are
adding to the original require-
ments as set forth by the Bible.
Judaism is always known not
to be a religion of extremes but
of regulated measures of be-
h a v i o u r. Furthermore, it is
claimed that were one to wear
this garment to bed, one would
be belittling the garment with
which a Mitzvah is performed.
Restricting it only to daytime
and upright use, retains a cer-
tain respect for the garment.
Those who permit or require
the wearing of this garment
during sleep do so because of
a mystical feeling that it is ad-
visable to take something to
bed which symbolizes a Mitzvah
for protection against the evil
spirits that are prevalent during
sleeping hours.

FERRELL HR. MEYERS
TEL AVIV (JTA)—The Histra-
drut campaign in the United States
this year will seek to raise $5,000„-
000 over and above the regular
campaign goal for a scholarship
fund for technical education in Is-
rael.
Yehoshoua Levi, Histradrut treas-
urer, announced this at a luncheon
given by the Histradrut education
and culture department for Dr. Sol
Stein, executive director of the His-
tradrut campaign in the United
States, and for his deputy, Israel
Stolarsky.
The treasurer said the new fund
would enable the Histradrut to ex-
paid its AMAL technical education
network.
A rally marking the 40th anni-
versary of the American Histradrut
campaign was held in the Habimah
Theater, to which Premier Levi
Eshkol sent a greeting.
