Blood Researcher From Area Dies in Plane Crash Dr. Robert Levin. a young phy- sician from Detroit, was killed in the crash of a United Airlines jet near Newport, Tenn., last week. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Abra- ham J. Levin, 7420 Franklin, Franklin, he was one of four blood specialists aboard the plane when it carried 39 persons to their deaths in the Great Smoky Moun- tains. The four were on their way to a conference of specialists at Oak Ridge, Tenn. Dr. Levin, 30, married and the father of two, was to report at the conference on his research into blood platelets, minute blood . important to clotting. A colleague at the Institutes of Health at Bethesda, Md., from which Dr. Levin was on leave to conduct his research at Yale Uni- versity, called the young physician "an unbelievingly promising young man." The associate, Dr. Emil Freireich, said he would deliver the paper in Dr. Levin's behalf. He called the death "a terrible loss" to medical research and the fight on cancer. A graduate of Bloomfield Hills High School, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Le- vin joined the Institutes of Health staff in 1961. Levin, dean of the Orthodox rabbis in Detroit for 25 years until his death in 1926, was the grandfather of Dr. Levin.
