Spoon Brothers Building Apartments
Along Detroit River's Shoreline

Ira and Lionel Spoon, whose
firm, Spoon Realty & Construc-
tion Co., broke ground for Detroit's
newest skyscraper apartment
building, Shoreline East, 8200 East
Jefferson, are members of one of
the city's most experienced build-
ing firms.
The brothers are sons of Max
Spoon, and their uncle is George
Spoon, who have been custom
builders in the Detroit area for
more than 40 years.
Max and George Spoon have
built hundreds of palatial homes
in Sherwood Forest, Palmer Woods
and the Detroit Golf Club areas.
Ira and Lionel have specialized
in construction of shopping
centers and apartment build-
ings. Their first major shopping
center was Royal Madison Plaza
in Madison Heights, a Detroit
suburb. They also developed a
number of residential subdivi-
sions in that area.
Among their major jobs in re-
cent years have been Royal Oak
Plaza and duplex rental project
costing more than a million; Col-
lege Grove Manor in Northwest
Detroit; Metro Plaza Shopping
Center at Algonac and other large-
scale commercial projects.
The Spoon brothers are lawyers,
both holding degrees from Wayne
State University Law School. Both
are members of the State Bar of
Michigan and other professional
organizations.
In their newest undertaking,
Shoreline East, the brothers said
it would be one of the largest con-
struction jobs they have under-
taken.
The 20-floor ultra-modern resi-
dential property, with views of the

river from every one of its 212
apartments, was designed by the
architectural firm of Green &
Savin.
Apartments will have one or
two bedrooms, with some effi-
ciencies. Instead of open balconies,
bays with large picture windows
will provide added comfort for
residents.
There will be a plaza in front
of the building extending to the
river's edge and surface park-
ing for all tenants and guests.
Tinted glass will be used in the
windows to minimize glare, and
upper-floor tenants will have
panoramic views of practically
the whole city and suburbs. The
laundry area for the tenants will
have its own coffee bar and sun
deck.
Shoreline East's location is con-
sidered one of the best in the
near-downtown area — seven min-
utes from the business district,
minutes away from suburban
areas and two blocks from the
city marina.
Nearby are many stores, shops
and supermarkets.
The grounds will be landscaped
with trees, shrubs and flowers
surrounding the tower.
