WSU Law Prof. Richard Strichartz Appointed City Controller by Mayor Detroit's top fiscal post has gone to Richard Strichartz, Mayor Ca- vanagh announced Tuesday. The new city controller succeeds Alfred M. Pelham, effective July 27. Strichartz, 41, of 17601 Wiscon- sin, was serving as a special as- sistant to the mayor while on leave as a Wayne State University law professor. A native of New York City, Stric hartz is one of Cava- nagh's closest advisers, Ii a v - in g directed Detroit partici- ation in federal a i d programs and spearhead- ed activities Strichartz dealing with social welfare, ju- venile delinquency, accelerated public works and youth pro- grams. He also wrote speeches for Cavanagh. He was a law professor at New York University before coming to Wayne State in 1956. Christian Leader Stops In on Visit From Holy Land The visit to the Holy Land by Pope Paul VI has opened up new contact between Orthodox church, other Christians and Jews, accord- ing to the archbishop of ancient Galilee. The Most Rev. George Hakim was in Detroit briefly to visit with members of the Syro-Melchite Catholic community and spoke at a luncheon sponsored by El Al Is- rael Airlines. He was on a tour of the United States. "We are very much divided and, I am sorry to say, we're fighting each other. Since the Holy Fath- er's visit and his meetings with the Orthodox churchmen, we feel we are living in a new ecumenical area," he said. The archbishop added that the pope's visit has brought many tourists to Israel and Jordan. Strichartz attended the Univer- sity of South Carolina, Columbia University, England's Oxford Uni- veristy, University of Miami, Yale and NYU. He and his wife Beatrice have four children. Regional Director of State's Bnai Brith Youth Akiva Day School Bernstein-Saperstein _Engagement Told Announces New, International Staff Akiva Hebrew Day School will open Sept. 10 at the Labor Zionist Institute. Eighty students are en- rolled in classes from kindergar- ten through fifth grade. Announcement of the Hebrew faculty was made this week. Mrs. Sarah Lewin, a graduate of the Teacher's Seminary in Jerusalem and former student at Bar Ilan University, will teach first grade. Second and third grades will be taught by Rabbi and Mrs. Mar- tin J. Tatlebaum, who come to De- troit from the Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh. Rabbi Tatlebaum, a na- tive of St. Paul, was ordained at the Mercaz Horav Kook Rabbin- ical College of Jerusalem and served as a chaplain with the United States forces in Egypt. He was rabbi of the Bnai Israel Con- gregation of Steubenville, Ohio, before coming to Pittsburgh. Mrs. Tatlebaum is a graduate of the Mizrachi Teacher's Seminary of Jerusalem and has been active in elementary grade Hebrew teach- ing for the past 10 years.
