The bridegroom precedes the
bride in the procession to the wed-
ding canopy.
Several reasons are advanced
for this procedure. In the first
place, historically speaking, man
was created first before a woman.
Secondly, the commentaries write
that at the revelation on Mt. Sinai
the Almighty and Israel were com-
pared to groom and bride. The
Almighty naturally was there first
and Moses came up to meet him.
Thirdly, it is simply a matter of
etiquette and concern not to have
the bride come first and stand
there alone as if she were waiting
for someone to marry her. The lat-
ter reason indicated shows how
much concern Jewish practices
and tradition had for the feelings
of women.
