Socialist leader - and Nazi foe
Toni. Sender, died June 26 in
New York. She was 75. At the
time of her death she was spokes-
man at the United Nations for the
of
International Confederation
Free Trade Unions.
Miss Sender, a born rebel,
shocked her Orthodox Jewish par-
ents when at the age of 15 in
Germany she took a job in a
Frankfurt real estate office. She
became active in Europe's growing
trade union movement and went
to Paris, where she became editor
of a trade union magazine.
Back in Germany during World
War I, she broke with the Social
Democrats and joined a pacifist
faction. After the war she was the
youngest of 40 women elected to
the Reichstag.
Such Nazis as Josef Goebbels
and Herman Goering found the
fragile-looking, but fiery, Miss
Sender a fly in their ointment.
She escaped into Czechoslovakia
in 1933 a few steps ahead of
Hitler's secret police.
For two years she edited a
Socialist daily in Belgium, and
then came to this country where
she mounted verbal attacks against
the Nazis and aided European
refugees. During World War II
she worked in the Office of Stra-
tegic Services, and following the
establishment of the United Na-
tions worked in several of its agen-
cies as economist and consultant.
Miss Sender joined the Interna-
tional Confederation of Free Trade
Unions shortly after it was formed
in 1949 as a rival to the Commun-
ist World Federation of Trade
Unions. She fought for an investi-
gation of Communist slave labor
and worked for full employment,
human rights and disarmament.
`Suess' Director Dies
Veit Harlan, who made the in-
famous "Jud Suess" for the Nazis
to incite the Germans to pogroms
and mass murder, survived his
leader by less than 20 years. Des-
pised by his fellow-Germans, he
died in camp recently, almost for-
gotten at the age of 64.
