Eskhol Visit Cements Friendship With France

the fact that, if private firms
were to give in to Arab threats
in the demands for a boycott of
Israel, the economy of the Jew-
ish state would be harmed
seriously.
Gen. de Gaulle had expressed
to Eshkol, "admiration" for Is-
rael's work in Africa, and voiced
a favorable reaction toward Is-
rael's a i d to underdeveloped
countries.
Earlier Monday, during a lunch-
eon tendered by Premier Pompi-
dou in honor of the Israeli prime
minister, Pompidou had said We
know that no government aspires
toward peace as keenly as does
the Israeli government. That is
why we are in favor of maintain-
ing a balance of power in the Mid-
dle East." The French premier
further stressed Franc o-Israeli
friendship.
In response to Pompidou's toast,
Eshkol mentioned Israel's "deep
gratitutde to France," expressing
his certitude that "The second
half of our mutual friendship will
be even closer and more produc-
tive, if possible, than the first.'
Eshkol also conferred earlier with
Foreign Minister Couve de Miff-
vine and other top-ranking offi-
cials.
In the opinion of all qualified
observers here, Eshkol and Shi-
mon Peres, Israel's deputy mini-
ster of defense, who is visiting
France with the Israeli premier,
have scored a resounding vic-
tory and have helped to draw
closer than ever the relations
between France and Israel.
Once again, it is felt here, the
friendship between France and
Israel has been reaffirmed by the
topmost officials of the two gov-
ernments.
The French government's
ministry of Defense is "most
understanding of Israel's prob-
lems and needs" in the military
area it was revealed here Wed-
nesday, after a conference be-
tween Israel's and France's top-
most defense officials, conduct-
ed here as part of the agenda
on Eshkol's visit.
The mutual Franco-Israeli "un-
derstanding" of Israel's current
defense posture emerged as a
result of a conference held here
Tuesday night between Eshkol,
who holds Israel's defense min-
istry portfolio in addition to the
premiership, and Pierre Messmer,
French minister for the armies.
On the Israeli side, those who
participated in that session, lasting
more than an hour, were also
Deputy Defense Minister Shimon
Peres, and Admiral Mordechai
Limon, Israel's defense ministry
representative in Europe.
Without discussing the results
of that conference in detail, pub-
. licly, Eshkol told the Jewish Tele-
)graphic Agency Wednesday that
the discussion with Messmer was
"highly satisfactory."
Eshkol visited the headquarters
of the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organiza-
tion here, being received as a
guest of honor by Rene Maheu,
director-general of UNESCO.
The Israeli flag was flown from
a staff in front of the build-
ing as the Israeli government
leader arrived for his visit, and
Maheu met him on the steps at
the entrance, introducing him later
to other leading officials of the
world organization.
Maheu presented Mrs. Eshkol
with a book published by
UNESCO, devoted to Israel's art
treasures. After the inspection
of the UNESCO headquarters,
Mr. and Mrs. Eshkol and mem-
bers of their party were guests
of honor at a luncheon tendered
for them by Maheu. The event
was attended by most of
UNESCO's leading officials.
Eshkol's most important ap-
pointment Wednesday was an
appearance before the French
National Assembly, where he
was greeted formally by the na-
tional Legislature's president,
Chaban Delmas.

Later, he addressed a luncheon
given in his honor by the diplo-
matic press and foreign press as-
sociations here. He also received
delegations from French-Jewish
organizations.
Wednesday night, Eshkol was
the host at a dinner in honor of
members of the French Cabinet,
leading members of the National
Assembly and other public figures.
Thursday he was honored by the
French defense minister at a ban-
quet in honor of the Israeli pre-
mier; today he was to attend a
reception given by the Franco-
. Israeli Friendship Society. Fol-
lowing this he will leave Paris for
the country home of Baron Ed-
mond de Rothschild where he will
spend the weekend.
Premier Eshkol and his party
will return to Paris on Monday at
which time he will begin a three-
day tour of French military, agri-
cultural and industrial establish-
ments. Following a press confer-
ence to be held on Thursday, the
Israeli prime minister will leave
for Israel on July 10.
(The Egyptian government in-
formed the French Foreign Office
that any arms transaction arising
from Premier Eshkol's visit to
France may upset "normalization"
of French-Arab relations.
(According to earlier reports, the
French Government firmly re-
jected similar expessions which
Arab envoys tried to voice to the
French Foreign Office on the
Eshkol visit.)
