Knesset Will Probe Return to Egypt
of Air Force Pilot Who Defected

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Acting
Defense Minister Pinhas Sapir
told the Cabinet today that he
would submit at the next meeting
information concerning the re-
ported return to Cairo of Abbas
Hilmi, the Egyptian Air Force
pilot who defected with his Czech-
built training plane to Israel last
January.
It was reported eorlier that, ac-
cording to Israeli sources, Hilmi
had been kidnapped from Argen-
tina by Egyptian agents. The cir-
cumstances under which Hilmi
was brought back to Cairo are
still shrouded in mystery.
In Cairo, the newspaper Al
Abram reported yesterday that

Senate Committee
OKs Solis Horwitz
for Defense Post

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
Senate Armed Services Committee
confirmed the appointment of Solis
Horwitz, 53, as asistant secretary
of defense for administration, a
newly created post.
Horwitz is originally from Pitts-
burgh. He worked with President
Johnson when Mr. Johnson was
Senate majority leader and chair-
man of the Senate Preparedness
subcommittee.

"

Hilmi had returned to Egypt
after going to the Egyptian Em-
bassy in Argentina last week
and asking for repatriation.
"It is illogical," Israeli sources
stated, "that he returned of his
own free will as the Egyptian
radio asserts, because under the
circumstances his future is not
very bright."
According to the Israeli sources,
Hilmi went to Argentina about 10
days ago, after he had asked for
permission to leave Israel and go
to South America. Israel, these
same sources say, paid the Egyp-
tian officer's airline fare.
Some cabinet ministers have
asked for an investigation to ascer-
tain whether there was any negli-
gence in the handling of the affair.
The Liberal Party faction in the
Knesset, Israel's Parliament, has
requested that the Knesset For-
eign Affairs Committee take up
the matter immediately.

Nasser Would Fight
to Stop 'Aggression'

CAIRO—United Arab Republic
President Gamal Abdel Nasser
told a graduating class of pilots
that "war with Israel is inevitable"
because "Israel is an aggressor
nation," and such "aggression"
must be stopped.

LISTENING

LONDON (JTA) — Prime Min-
ister Alec Douglas-Home declared
in Commons during debate on the
British contributions for the relief
of the Arab refugees, that the
British government had taken
steps to assure that its contribu-
zr
tions reached those whom it was
intended to benefit.
He made the statement in reply
to a question from a deputy who
said there was a concern about
"over-centralization" of the funds
of the UN Relief and Works
Agency for the refugees and asked
SHERILL COHEN, daughter of if the government could take a

keeping . . . so, applied to the
Detroit Board of Education, was
accepted and assigned to the Win-
terhalter School starting next Sep-
tember • . . Meanwhile, the Beth
Yehudah buildings on Dexter were
vacated on June 30, having been
sold to the city school system . . .
Sherill was a bit shocked when
the principal told her of the vast
overflow of Winterhalter students
. . . but the shock turned into ex-
treme delight after being informed

LUNCHEON

BRUCE ACKNER, 9-year-old son
of Roslyn and Stanley Ackner, has
a distinction all his own . . On
his bathing trunks, young Bruce
wears a regular seasons tag plus
1/2 a tag ... and both have a mean-
ing . . . Seems that he had gone
to the Oak Park Recreation Center
to see if he was the 4'5" required
height for swimming in the Oak
Park pool without a parent around
. . Wasn't quite up to snuff . . .
1/2 inch short at 52 1/2" . . . Bruce
felt bad but all wasn't lost for
that week . .. At the Palmer Park
Theater, anyone measuring under *
581/2" got in free with a parent *.
. . . Bruce, of course, made it with
plenty to spare!

trip west ... While touring through
a remote section of Mexico, they
stopped at a lonely little ranch *

surprised to come face to face
with what was obviously a 100 per j
cent. American cowboy . . . He was Ar

fine horse you have there. If you
could' only rub out that brand
mark, I'd buy him from you." . . . *
The cowboy said, "Mister, if I ever
could rub out that mark I'd stilt '41-

The prime minster also dis-
closed that, after the United
States, Britain was "far in ad-
vance of any other country" in
its contributions to UNRWA. He
said that UNRWA spent in 1963
$35,186,888 and that the British
had contributed 1,928,572 pounds
($3,015,000) to that total.
The prime minster also said he
did not agree that the Arab ref-
ugee problem was a "legacy of the
Palestine situation," a reference
to the fact that Britain ruled Pal-
estine under a League of Nations
mandate until 1948. He said "it
is a legacy of the Arab-Jewish
quarrel."
