Mohelim Conclude Training Course On the Record By NATHAN ZIPRIN Note on a Dialogue . • . The American Jewish Commit- tee has in recent months been in the forefront of a development whose implementations could con- ceivably eradicate in due time the most important source of anti- Semitism among Christians—eli- mination of the belief in Jewish guilt in the death of Christ. Now it finds itself under fire from two disparate sources—from Orthodox and Reform Jewish ele- ments. The critics are taking the view that elimination of the dei- cide concept is a purely theological problem for our Christian friends to solve and that no secular Jew- ish organization has the compet- ence or authority to intervene in what they claim is an exclusively Christian matter. These views were aired rather sharply at the Central Conference of American Rabbis and at the annual conven- tions of the Rabbinical Assembly of America and of Young Israel. This writer has never been an enthusiastic supporter of the view that knocking at Vatican doors You Can Always Tell the Difference BUY... &OF NOODLES ■ /: Oa vow Aft. =T will bring Jewish redemption. But it would seem that concerted criti- cism serves no purpose now. More- over—and I hold no brief for the American Jewish Committee—it can be argued witth good merit that AJC involvement in securing a Vatican declaration on Jews that would absolve our people of cul- pability in the crucifixion of Christ stemmed from considerations of human relations rather than from theological or religious motiva- tions. - In any event, this new dialogue only illustrates anew the lack of centrality in the American Jewish community on meeting issues transcending organizational ideo- logies. . Jews and Negroes . . . In the struggle for Negro rights over the past decade Jews have played a role exceeded only by the Negroes themselVes. In fact Jewish involvement in the Negro cause had reached a point where our pul- pits were being transformed into platforms of rights advocacy, often to the neglect of essential Jewish preachment. One would think that this record would be recognized by our Negro friends, and translated into proper attitudes. Yet there are indications of mass - level - bitterness in the Negro community against Jews, aggravated no doubt by the fact that the Jew is white and of an- other religion. There are even those, and this includes some so- called sociologists, who claim that Jews are the most prejudiced eth- nic group in the United States. There is no way of determining the basis for that incredible con- clusion. A recent wholly incredible survey by the University of Chicago showed that 77% of the Jews interviewed indicated a high degree of anti-Negro prejudice. However, the professors who made the study later admitted it was in- adequate since the questionnaire included an explosive question on intermarriage. Of course there are pockets of prejudice in the Jewish community against Negroes, but whoever says that 77% of our people are sin- ners in that regard simply doesn't know what he is talking about and is in addition ignorant of the Jew- ish climate. /Ea Iwo MT.
