Jewish Aid to Civil Rights Lauded Before NAACP WASHINGTON (JTA) — Jewish organizations were lauded by Roy Wilkins, executive secretary of the National Association for the Ad- vancement of Colored People, for their work toward passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Wilkins said in an address be- fore the 55th annual NAACP con- vention that "many hands and minds and hearts brought victory." He singled out Jewish organiza- tions, working under the banner of the leadership conference on civil rights, for special credit along with national Negro, labor, church, fraternal, and women's organiza- tions. His speech generally stressed the cooperation of many American ele- ments to advance the civil rights of Negroes. 15 Rabbis Arrested in Florida Protest `Maccabees' Patrol Helps Cut Crime Over 90 Per Cent in New York Area (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) NEW YORK — The Hassidic organizer of a citizens' car patrol in the crime-ridden Crown Heights section of Brooklyn reported Mon- day night that crime in the area had dropped by 90 per cent since the patrols began. Police, officials, noting that the area had been heavily reinforced with additional police, confirmed that the situation had improved. The police reinforcement followed the formation of the Hassidic ra- dio-equipped car patrol last May 17 after a wave of muggings, as- saults and murders in the area. Rabbi Samuel Schrage, who led the organization of the car patrols, said that the number of calls received by the civilian Patrol headquarters had dropped to an average of 15 a night. Pre- viously from 50 to 100 calls were received nightly. He credited the police as well as the unarmed patrols for the improvement. (JTA)— Fifteen Reform rabbis were among 37 demonstrators arrested here when they sought to recite Hebrew prayers at a motel involved in a desegregation controversy. The Department of Justice no- tified Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, that federal agents have opened a full prelimi- nary investigation of the arrest. (Sen. Javitz requested federal inter- cession upon hearing of the mass arrest of the rabbis.) Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, a Negro desegregation leader, led the delegation in prayer. The rabbis arrived here to join the Rev. Martin Luther King's de- segregation drive. They came from the convention in Atlantic City of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. The motel manager, James Brock. shoved the rabbis and abused them physically. stating "you are not going to pray here. This is private property."
