City of Hope Sets
Midwest Conclave
on Leadership

Dr. Maynard M. Cohen, a 1944
graduate of Wayne State Univer-
sity, was among the five recipients
of the first Distinguished Service
Awards of the university's school
of medicine.
The award, for "distinguished
professional contributions to medi-
cine" was presented to Dr. Cohen
for his research in neuropharma-
cology and neurochemistry.
Dr. Cohen. who lives with his
wife and two daughters in Wil-
mette, Ill., is the son of Mrs. Dora
Cohen, 13030 Northfield, Oak
Park. Mrs. Cohen, the former
Doris Roseneshine, is the daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Rosen-
shine, 20245 Rutherford.
Dr. Cohen was born in Canada
but received his education here,
getting his baccalaureate degree at
the University of Michigan.
He completed pathology and
neurology residencies at the
University of Minnesota and re-
ceived his PhD there. In nine
years he had achieved the rank
of professor of neurology.
Dr. Cohen left Minnesota in
1963 to accept the chair of neu-
rology at the University of Illinois.
His interest in functions and dis-
orders of the nervous system has
led to important contributions to
understanding of cerebrovascular
problems. He serves as chairman
of the department of neurology,
Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital,
Chicago.
Also receiving an award was Dr.
Frederick J. Margolis, Buffalo pe-
diatrician, who graduated from
WSU in 1941. He became interest-
ed in medical films as director of
field health in the Bureau of In-
dian Affairs when he made a
medical movie in the Navajo lan-
guage. He has made a number of
films on physical diagnosis which
are used for instruction in the
Wayne State School of Medicine.
Other recipients of the awards
were Dr. Gordon H. Scott, Dr.
Thomas E. Morgan and Rex Flem-
ing.

MSU Confers Doctorates
on Oak Park Neighbors

Oak Park neighbors received
their Ph.D degrees from Michigan
State University at commencement
exercises recently. Dr. Morton Plot-
nick lives with his wife and daugh-
ter at 24666 Rensselaer, and Dr.
Ronald M. Horwitz lives with his
wife and son at 24706 Rensselaer.
Dr. Plotnick, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Irving Plotnick, 21860 Beverly, Oak
Park, received his doctors degree in
adult and higher education. Em-
ployed by the Oak Park school
system, he is affiliated with the
Bnai Brith Youth Organization as
program supervisor.
Dr. Horwitz, a certified public
accountant, received his Ph.D in
financial administration. Son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Horwitz, 24020
Eastwood, Oak Park, he is an as-
sistant professor of finance at the
University of Detroit.

Wayne State Graduate
Gets Journalism Honors

An area resident and 1960 grad-
uate of Mumford High School,
Lloyd H. Weston, 18108 Kentucky,
graduated with triple honors from
Wayne State University.
Weston, news editor and column-
ist for the student newspaper, the
Daily Collegian, was named to
Wayne State's Mackenzie Honor
Society, for leadership, service and
scholarship. He also was named
outstanding male journalism gradu-
ate of the year by Sigma Delta
Chi, professional journalistic soci-
ety; and was recipient of the Mal-
colm Bingay Award for outstand-
ing journalism graduates. He plans
to work on the staff of the Ypsi-
lanti Press.

In a candlelight ceremony sol-
emnized Sunday at Adas Sholem
Syngogue, Marlene Carol Lipsky,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irving
Lipsky of Pennington Dr., was
wed to Robert Alan Balan, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Balansoff of
Norwood Ave., Oak Park. Rabbis
Jacob Segal and Israel Halpern
and Cantor Nicholas Fenakel offi-
ciated.
The bride wore a floor-length
sheath gown of peau de soie, with
open neckline, Empire bodice of
hand-corded Alencon lace and fit-
ted cummerbund. She wore a de-
tachable wateau chapel train which
fell from the shoulders and was
edged in garlands of matching
lace. The veil of silk illusion was
attached to petals of pearls. The
bride carried white orchids and
butterfly roses on her Bible.

Mizrachi Hatzair to Host
National President for
Weekend of Activities

Benjamin Silverberg, president of
Mizrachi Hatzair in New York, to-
gether with Yehudah Henkin, vice
president and dance group leader
of Mizrachi - Hatzair, will spend the
weekend with the Detroit Chapter
of Mizrachi Hatzair.
Purpose of their visit is to meet
with Rabbi Marshall Goldman, di-
rector of Detroit Mizrachi Youth,
and discuss further expansion into
the Windsor area.
Luncheon will be served 1 p.m.
Saturday for all guests of the Oak
Park and Metropolitan Detroit
chapters at the home of Rabbi and
Mrs. Goldman.
Silverberg will address all groups
5 p.m. Saturday at Cong. Beth
Yehudah, to be followed by social

Youth Leaders Named

Two new youth leaders have
been named at Adas Shalom Syna-
gogue for the coming term.
Bernard Gourwirtz will succeed
Dr. Louis Beresh as chairman of
the Bar and Bat Mitzvah Club,
which meets monthly on Sunday
mornings. Louis Weinstein succeeds
David Safran as chairman of the
Youth Commission.

er, was maid of honor. Mrs.
Jerry Finnk of Florida, the
bridegroom's sister, was matron
of honor. Bridesmaids were
Linda Bernstein, Marcy Dembs,
