Jefferson at the Detroit-Grosse Pointe city liMits and adjacent to Fox Creek, Shum- way's had a reputation for serving the very best Scotch and Cana- dian whisky . . . Rumor had it the captain cruised up Fox Creek late at night in a high powered boat and unloaded cases of con- traband practically at his back door . . . It was a well known fact that the good captain would not tolerate bathtub booze in his es- tablishment . . . It did not meas- ure up to the discriminating tastes of his customers . . . "Cap" (as he was known) had made many friends when he was running legi- timate saloins at the foot of Wood- ward and the old Electric Park .. . By popular demand "Cap" was soon selling food as well as liquor in Grosse Pointe . . . When pro- hibition was repealed he got one of the first licenses in the state and business went on uninter- ruptedly . . . "Cap" died in the early 1940's and Camille Brunton took over the business, operating the place with his brother John whom everybody knows only as "Mike." . . . They carried on the Shumway tradition of good food, leaning heavily to fish and sea food, at reasonable prices . . . The Brunton's made one innova- tion that proved a tremendous hit with their customers . . . About six or seven years ago, they started a New England sea food dinner promotion . . . One night a month, they served all the steamed clams, broiled lobster and fried chicken you could eat for five dollars per person . . . including soup and salad, too . . . This was such a success that they began serving their New England dinner two nights a month . . . Today, Mike is sole boss at Shumways and their New England dinner is served every night, with a reservation necessary to get everything pre- pared . . . In addition to things like Rocky Mountain rainbow trout, frog legs, red snapper, shrimp, scallops and lobster, Shum- way's menu includes the usual as- sortment of steaks and chops . . . The atmosphere is informal, re- laxed. The prices are moderate. AL ROSENBERG'S Holiday Manor strictly kosher restaurant on W. 8 Mile Rd., just E. of Greenfield, has been having rough luck in opening . . . but this Sun- day is definite . . . Unfortunate circumstances beyond his control caused the delay . . . However, having a strictly kosher restaurant is to many people well worth the wait . . . Al, of course, continues on with his top-grade catering for inside and outside the community. r d.° 41111111.0•1•IM ■ 1011-011•1111 ■ Milli0•1•111 ■ 0 IMP 0•1011111.0 4111110-0 OPID•0•11• Dinner at DARBY'S is a real treat • Visit Our New SKYLIGHT ROOM, Cocktail Lounge and Bar • AFTER THEATRE Snacks • . . a Delight LUNCHEON A Pleasure Res.
