French Jews to Open 3 Secondary Schools for N. African Refugees (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) PARIS—The Alliance Israelite Universelle has decided to open three Jewish secondary schools in major provincial centers where a large influx of North African Jewish refugees has taken place, it was announced here at the or- ganization's annual conference. The new schools will comprise part of the Alliance plan to pro- vide France with a closely knit network of Jewish institutions of ■ learning. The three new secondary schools, which will be located in Nice, Marseilles and Lyons, will begin operation in time for the forth- coming school term. In a report on the international activities of the organization, it was noted that the largest number of schools operated by Alliance are located in Morocco where 52 Alliance schools serve more than 13,000 students. There are 15 Alliance schools in Iran with 6,000 students and other schools in Israel, Tunisia and Lebanon. The more than 200 delegates at the conference under the chair- manship of Rene Cassin approved the organization's plans and heard number of reports n ties with jet her Jewish bodies. United Hias Service Honors Eleven Leaders of Jewish Migration During the Past 80 Years NEW YORK (JTA) — Eleven men who have made significant contributions in the field of Jew- ish migration during the past eight decades were honored in the Essex House Hotel at the 80th anniversary dinner of United .Hias Service. The event was held in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York. More than 250 Jewish community leaders attend- ed the dinner and announced gifts totaling $750,000 to UJA's 1964 campaign. United Hias Service is a beneficiary of the UJA cam- paign. The honored guests, four of whom were saluted posthumously, were cited by Daniel G. Ross, the dinner chairman, for providing the "unswerving leadership that enabled United Hias Service and its predecessor agencies to aid more than 3,000,000 migrants over the past 80 years." Those cited included the late John L. Bernstein, a president of the former Hias; Walter H. Bie- ringer, a president of the former USNA; the late Abner Bregman, a past president of United Hias Service; Murray Gurfein, president of United Hias Service, and the late Abraham Herman, a president of the former Hias.
